You have bands and musicians like U2, Lady Gaga, I dunno...Those kinds of people are very open about who they are, they give interviews on a regular basis, use Facebook, communicate with the fans in 1 way or another...
And then you have people like Boards of Canada who are very secret about who they are, what they're working on, don't give out interviews like, at all, and their only form of communicating with the fans is by other people (mdg and websites and pages run by Warp).
So because of that, and because people want to know more about their favorite bands or musicians, Old Tunes, R35TT and such is about the only way they can find out about their beginnings, or roots. We don't know veeery much about early BoC aside from some vague mentions in the interviews and that one reddit post where somebody claims that he knew the band (that may be bullshit though). That's why people easily fall for fake tracks and why people buy rare tapes for hundreds of thusands of millions of billions of thousands of hundreds of dollars. It's a way of connecting to the band. Yeah, I think this sounds stupid.

That's a perfect description. I have no idea, however, what prompts such discomfort at the idea for someone to release a copy of pre-Twoism tracks, and I figure there must be a valid reason behind such hostility. Just my thoughts.

Play By Numbers especially seems to be the case, based on past anecdotes

It's always made me wonder if the publishing of their old discography has ironically led to the handful of people that own copies keeping more of a tight grip on those releases than they would have otherwise. If a copy here and there has fallen into the hands of the public (Play By Numbers especially seems to be the case, based on past anecdotes) I wonder if someone would've slipped up and ripped them, not realizing what they had in their hands.

There have been a couple of stories of collectors claiming to own it, one or two other people swearing that they saw it in a shop years ago but passed on it, not knowing what it was. That's really been the only release prior to Twoism that has had stories like that associated with it. It's all old lore, someone else can chime in with the specifics if they'd like.
If you think about it, it makes sense. Originally, only Acid Memories, Play By Numbers and Hooper Bay were listed on their website's discography. Catalog 3 and Closes Vol. 1 were both added at the same time later, with notes that they were both repressed to CD in 1997. You'd think those would've leaked by now, given the more recent repress date and format, but by then, they already had a record deal, they had no need to shop their music around to strangers anymore. The circle probably retightened and those CDs probably only went to family and their "real" friends.
In 1995-1996, when Maxima was being shopped around, both Old Tunes were compiled at the same time and all 3 of those tapes got into some unnecessary hands on the band's quest to get signed.

I apologize for getting off topic. Sorry.
I don't understand how 200(?) copies of Hooper Bay were pressed on vinyl, and not a single one surfaced. Not only that, but they weren't, assuming, hand-pressed, so SOMEONE must have the plates. If that's true, I'm immensely surprised not a single person has even claimed to have the plates, seen a copy, or owned one at one point.
If the plates are out there, they can very easily be found, verified, and at least understood to be authentic. If this were true, it would at least give us a clue as to the legitimacy of Hooper Bay's existence, and 99% verify the existence and publication of the back catalog.

Don't feel bad, I just don't want this thread to get locked for the same reasons the other one was. I don't think quite that many copies of Hooper Bay were pressed and who knows the circumstances behind it, maybe it was a dry run for what they did with Twoism, which was...100 copies I think.
I'm sure Hooper Bay exists and actually there's probably a song or two from it on R35TT...people have said B12 sounds like a good candidate for Geyser, but that's very speculative - BoC published their own audio sample of Circle years ago, which is basically House of Abin'adab with some more effects over it. We got to hear Circle long before House of Abin'adab, actually. There's a pretty good theory that Noatak was played live at their ATP set (the song with the sample that sounds like it's saying "Noatak" - and the track length looks right)

Doors_Of_Perception wrote:Perhaps the re-pressing onto CD was simply a cataloging procedure? The Old Tunes are, likely, their "best" works from the eras, which is why they're so widely known.
Though, I do feel like Warp feeds into a lot of this mystique, and that Skam likely would've encouraged BoC to release the back catalog.
Doors_Of_Perception wrote:We do have some decent speculation about SOME tracks from R35TT? Like Godever, 5D, Eye/Ear, etc.
I wouldn't be very amazed if a lot of R35TT is outtakes. That's really based off the one that sounds almost identical to something in Hi Scores, but that's my opinion.
And I do totally understand about the thread.
