Happy Cycling(Original Peel Session broadcast version)

Fri Jun 12, 2009 11:38 pm

Hi all, long time lurker here, just wanted to start off by asking does anyone have a copy of the original Peel Session broadcast version of Happy Cycling(Bad Day?). What are the main differences from the released version, and does anyone else think that this along with 'XYZ' may be the tracks included on the Warp20 box set?

Hey Aimo.Week or so ago I posed this question in an abridged form, excluding your sharp speculation (I can't imagine any other tracks besides sounds blasted at the live Warp (obvs non ATP... surprise us tho!) concerts.. heard it from you first) Anyway this blog of walnuts had no response about HC"2".

Originally I just wanted to hear if there were any extra and nifto synths or something, hey, did you NOT read somewhere there was a difference? I did, not sure where, somewhere on the internet. Will anyone confirm that there is an actual difference? Extra gulls?

Hook me up if you get a copy bro-bean. Can't find it, even to hear a difference. Bad day? WTF. :?:

Welcome and thanks for the hookup, staggx! cheers! i've never heard this version before, so this is awesome...

This is my favourite version of this track..

I love Happy Cycling, when that synth kicks in about 5 mins in, never fails to send tingles down my spine - it's one of those tracks that's great to listen to on the go, like '..Balloon' or 'Dawn chorus' - seems to compliment your surroundings wherever you are.

if this was constructed somehow with the album version... is it possible...

i would say it constructed from pieces from the album. there's no listing of this version anywhere. and some parts of it are slightly out of time. i would say it's homemade- a good attempt, but homemade.

Mmm... sorry to disagree on my very second post, but I believe it to be genuine!

It's well-documented that the version broadcast was not the same as the version released, and it's presumably the imperfections and less-focused structure that are the very reason it became known as "Bad Day", subsequently being re-recorded. See here for more info:

http://bocpages.org/wiki/Peel_Session

I'd say it's impossible to create such an edit from the released version. Agreed, the background loop in the intro is out of time, but the hat pattern on top of it is quite clearly fine. Or check out the ending, where the "flutey" melody can be heard on it's own, without the drums or backward voice. In the released version that doesn't happen anywhere in the track; there are no drums, but the reverse voices are always present.

Not arguing... just discussing.

Yes really its the ending that is perplexing. Unless someone else HAD the original samples.. and DID something with them. Oh, the reverb explosion at the end sounds right.

While other tracks were pre- mixed for radio, perhaps they mixed this klunker live in the studio. Perhaps they let Mr. Peel push the fader functions here and there.

As far as documentation, there is alot of gobble about this from non sources on such wellsprings of speculation and fanatical knowitall-knownothingism as the BoC pages (improving), all which may as well amount to zero. Just stories. Myths. From the horse's slobbering mouth as it were.

The rhythm track is pretty fizzy.. Sounds like center stereo with dynamism. Did no one tape the entire program with ads and identifications? Where is the radio version of Olson3 with introductions? Did Peel start babbling wildly at the end there and that is why it is a clipped file?

Yes, this is correct. I recorded it directly from the radio when the Peel Session was first broadcast, and I posted the recording on here when it was discussed a couple of years ago.

Neat! Only a few years late? Where is the rest of it? What did you use to record it?

It was the first time I had ever heard of them, I was recording tracks from the programme at random and I just happened to get Happy Cycling but none of the others, although I do remember hearing the brief interview they did with Peel before/after XYZ (also available on soulseek etc)

i think the intro owes a lot to this:

Anyone know where the title "Bad Day" originated? Was it the title actually given out by Peel on the original broadcast?

At the risk of asking the obvious (apologies if it's been discussed somewhere before), do you think that the short, clipped, recurring voice sample (first happening at 1'32" in this version, 1'35" in the official release) is actually saying "Bad Day"?

It's written that way on the Peel Sessions website:

Tracklist
* Aquarius
* Happy Cycling (Changed From Bad Day)
* Olson
* Xyz (Pronounced X Y Zee)
