Fucking around with BoC

Tue Mar 13, 2012 1:08 am

Semi-inspired by a post in the Speculation thread:

What are some good things to do to a track that sound great? Such as slowing down a track, reversing it, etc.

For me, I love the sound of Macquarie Ridge if you slow it down and lower the pitch an octave. Especially during the parts where the drums stop for a moment, and when the harp comes in. (I also sped it up an octave and it sounded like something from a Sonic The Hedgehog game).

Then I LOVE how 1969 sounds in reverse, and the way the chorus works almost makes more sense as a cadence than when it's going forward. Can hear it here.

I'm not even kidding, I'm doing this aswell!

Try Chromakey dreamcoat slowed down to 40%, amazing.

Dayvan Cowboy sounds great at 40 aswell.

This topic inspired me to have a play around with the speeds of some tracks...

Left Side Drive and especially a few from The Campfire Headphase seemed like good candidates for speeding up.

But - instead of running the whole thing at a higher speed, only the tempo is increased, keeping the original pitch.

Left Side Drive - 130%

'84 Pontiac Dream - 138%

Hey Saturday Sun - 134%

Slow This Bird Down - 147%

I think that 5.9.78 slowed down by about 40% is just beautiful.

A friend and I have always been curious if they recorded that track and then marcus was like, "Mike, slow that bird down a bit, eh?" (or whatever). It sounds much better imo sped up quite a bit like you mention above.

Ha, I never actually thought of it that way - maybe that could be so.

Apologies if the link in that post broke down earlier - for the moment, it is now working again and can be listened to :)

Parts of Geogaddi completely change when you boost the treble super high. Certain sounds come out front that add to the already existing rhythms changing their groove. It's sweet.

I think everyone should listen to all of Geogaddi reversed, it's on youtube if you don't want to do it yourself. There are so many cool moments.

I agree wholeheartedly that all boc fans should hear Geogaddi backwards at least once. I would always play the vinyl backwards, though lately I've figured out how to make a really good CD rip and reverse it. That and I got a new turntable that can't play records backwards, so no more reverse vinyl. :(

I've been downloading the Boards of Canada reversed stuff from YouTube. Anybody got any more recommendations of songs at different speeds? I first started looking into this stuff after hearing a slowed down version of Vordhosbn by Aphex Twin, but I think BoC would be better.

There are some incredibly cool moments if you reverse the Broken Drum remix.

Just going to say, 747 played at 45 RPM (+35% speed) is a totally different animal. Into the later part of the song, I actually greatly prefer it at this speed...although this particular YouTube video is a bit harsh sounding.

That 747 sounds great.

Because I realised I still had the earlier 'same pitch, faster tempo' files to hand: all of Slow This Bird Down

This tracks always been interesting to me, The name of the track could be any number of things... I've always took it as an invitation to slow the track down.

I actually listen the TCHP slowed down more often than I do the original speed... Maybe i'm weird, but I also think MHTRTC sounds really cool sped up. And Geogaddi is awesome reversed!

Also on a side note; Aphex Twins Strange Formula Slowed WAY down (Don't know the speed) at a certain point starts sounding like dub step. (Its got the Wubs) It ends up being 25min 56sec long, and it's sweet!

Tue Jul 10, 2012 12:35 pm

As i already told about this - XYZ is a good example of slowing down the speed too )
