I disagree with setting the price at "what the market will bear" at unreasonable levels just for the heck of maximizing profits. A customer should get their moneys worth, but hey lets be honest, if customers TRULY got their moneys worth there would be 0 profit. "Business is born out of sin." -unknown

I know that she mentioned financial issues, but I still can't help but wonder if Mike somehow got inside information about a future Warp cd/digital release of this old BoC material, and that's why they feel selling these right now would be a good idea?

Yeah, probably got his old lady knocked up and bought a new house on the strength of that....

I'm taking their reasons at face value and the timing is good due to TH hype. I'm thinking of getting round to auctioning my spare Japanese Geogaddi cd for the same reasons.

I can't believe there will be anything too soon after TH and the value of these things may not peak until after a bocset (please let that happen one day) anyway.

This is all very sentimental. The fact is that present-day ideology on what is desirable or worthy is not inherent to trade itself and is, in my opinion, wholly unreasonable. There are even class asymmetries to this supposed universality of uniqueness/sentimental value: nobody will give three shits about the sentimental worth of your belongings if you REALLY need to pawn them off.

If you think that when it comes to music the mode of production is unimportant, then good luck trying to make music for a living. Collectors are just a layer of leeching middlemen and in this respect their combined social effect is not different from that of the worst major label, appropriating the labour of musicians to set in motion the circulation of a commodity which will net a profit which didn't exist before. As for musical surplus production, it really is grotesque: obscure and mediocre garage bands fetching crazy prices on the collector market serve a similar purpose to Enrique Iglesias or the Hansons, but with a different strategy.

No way, we need something to discuss for the next 44 hours! What's the next stop on the BoC hype train? Hooper Bay leak?

i think theyre copies, all 3 tapes inc boc maxima are identical. a watmm moderator apparently has an original boc maxima. its not Memorex either, its Sony.

they look fresh considering they're from mid 90s and compare those tapes on ebay to the older scans on boc pages to see how aged the older tapes look. here also notice - not the same brand of tapes as on ebay.

do note that datathief did mention he and a producer (surprise surpise) friend did make copies and i tell you now that as i re-read that story on bocpages i'm even more confused.

copies of originals, original copies, who copied what, did they get just 1 copy of vol 1 and one of vol. 2 from boc and then made a copy each and each kept one original or made 2 copies of each ???? ffs

very hard to know whats what tbh but hey thats not to say boc mixed up the brands of tape when copying them or their recipients when.. ehem… copying them

interesting...remember the ol' old tunes vol 1 debate?
well seems like a few old tunes is old tunes vol 1.

in the pics...of the few old tunes auction...the cassette labels say old tunes vol.1

Yikes ! An easy way to deflate this sale would be for Mdg to just say they're not real :D

Glad I don't have the money to bid anyways

It is quite possible they used different brands though and no two tapes are the same.

While I'd love to own Vol. 2 (tunes dating back to '85, whaaa?), we really should wait out the release of some kind of compilation of unreleased material. Considering MHTRTC was almost a compilation of things they'd been working on in the past, it doesn't seem like too unrealistic an idea for this to be made. I trust mdg with every bit of light he's shed on the subject thus far (who should be popping up with a comment about this sale in the next day or two).

 If you think they used one particular tape brand or copied them all at once, would be somewhat absurd. I think they just made copies willy nilly when ever an opportunity presented itself, like sending a demo off or a present for a hexagon sun member, friend or what ever speculative reason. So they no doubt used what ever tapes were on hand at the time.. Unless you can show multiple occasions of the same tape being used, then go ahead.

I'm curious to read mdg's response on the matter. To be honest, her excuse for selling the tapes sounds flimsy to me, and the timing seems crass. Kinda insulting to BOC fans, really, the shamelessness of it all. Yet, the Paradinases will probably not be disappointed by their results: I wish that they don't get more than $500 worth for it (since no tape should sell for more than that, anyway--it's a fucking injustice to the world when they do), but let's be realistic--someone will pay up.

I'm sorry but I fail to see why a tape should sell for less than any other hard format? Unless you are judging the price on artwork realestate? Which would be absurd. For some like myself, cassettes hold a special place in my heart as my first albums were purchased on Tape not CD nor vinyl.. I'm not sure about yourself though.

I do now hold a special penchant for vinyl though and love this format possibly more than cassette.
