I used to really dislike Zoetrope, thinking it was too simplistic and that it didn't feel like much thought had been put into it.

For some reason after a few listens (normally when I was on the move or doing something else so couldn't be bothered to skip/change it) I began to notice how beautiful it is, and now I find it to be the perfect end to IABPOITC. Bit like someone/something floating away through space perhaps, if I were to get all twatty about it.

Music For Pylons is a load of old balls though.

Came here to post Zoetrope, possibly one of the only BoC tracks I really don't like. Its style seems out of place on IABPOITC (although maybe that was the point), it doesn't really do anything interesting and it goes on for FAR too long imo. Possibly would like it loads more if it were shortened to maybe half of its runtime.

Making all those interesting as fuck albums that they never released, yet still use to taunt us.

I doubt they're as interesting as everyone thinks tbh. Those samples are cool, but the only one that really got me interested was Play By Numbers because I'm a massive mbv fan.

If R35TT is compiled from that pre Old Tunes period then I think those old albums are probably interesting for BOC fan but nothing amazing. Only a few tracks on there do I think are genuinely great.

You doubt they're interesting because of your opinion on r35tt and old tunes, that's all :P I happen to love the old tunes just as much as their released material, they're a wonderful change of pace and style, so the pre-twoism releases would probably be right up my alley. Sometimes I wish I hadn't known they'd ever existed, so I wouldn't have the disappointed feeling of knowing I'll probably never hear them whenever they come up in conversation.

Yeah, this is all opinion based. We'll see what the polls say (not that they're very accurate/scientific), but I haven't seen many people who think that the majority of the R35TT is decent. There is a lot of sub-par crap on there because it is from their early amateur days, and I think most people have a few tracks that they can pick out on there and say they love. Yet so many want to see the albums, and I just think there will be a correlation there if R35 is indeed compiled from those albums: Some decent tracks, and the rest.

I love BOC but these albums are early work for them, and unless you are a savant, you will not be an accomplished musician straight out of the womb.

I really need to attach "IMO" to my signature lol.

But the unreleased albums cover about ten years of material. I seriously doubt that they took ten years, plus all the music they did before they formed BoC, to start making decent music.

All of that work was done before they were 25ish assuming it is compiled from purely pre-twoism work. Old Tunes is much more advanced and also pre-twoism, so we can probably assume they made the tracks that appeared on R35 even earlier barring a few like She is P. So that puts R35 (IMO) at roughly adolescence to 22ish purely due to how it sounds in comparison to Old Tunes, and it would follow that the albums are from that period if they are what R35 is derived from.

I'm sorry but I don't see that as likely to be massively accomplished. Not terrible or anything though.

But that is all speculation on my part. I suppose it comes down to whether you consider most of R35 accomplished, which I don't. Again I love 2 or 3 tracks off there and the rest are... not shit, but not great. What they mostly show off is atmosphere, which they have always pulled off spectacularly, but that isn't the only thing I look for in their music.

I dunno, I feel like there's a certain air of entitlement to that argument. BoC are the artists and have complete control over what they want to release to the public as a part of their official discography. If they don't want to release a certain album or albums, they have the absolute right to do that. Maybe they're embarrassed by their earlier works (as many artists are), maybe they're focusing on creating new things instead of dwelling in the past. Maybe they just never planned for the general public to hear the first few albums.

Whatever the reasons, it's their work and they hold the right to not release it. We, as fans, shouldn't hold that against them. They don't really owe us anything.

That is also a point I'd agree with, but not in relation to his statement. I think it was just a comment on how he thinks it was a bad move generally, I don't get the sense he was saying that we deserve to hear it or anything. But don't let me put words in your mouth Drillkicker if that isn't correct.

No absolutely. I didn't mean to come off as pointing a finger at Drill individually, I was more using his statement to talk about the fanbase as a whole and its reactions to unreleased material and kinda lost myself haha. Sorry about that.

You wanna know the worst thing BoC have ever done? I'll tell you the worst thing BoC have ever done.

So, I just got back from a vacation to Edinburgh. I've got family who lives up there, but this time I spent quite a bit exploring the general area. The "main event" was when, against all odds, I bumped into Boards of Canada at a grocery store just outside of town.

I told them how cool it was to meet them in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother them and ask for photos or copies of Acid Memories or Play By Numbers or Hooper Bay or anything.

Mike said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but Marcus kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” as Mike kept closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard Marcus chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw them trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen oranges in their hoodies without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Excuse me, you need to pay for those first.” At first they kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the oranges and started scanning it multiple times, Mike stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each orange and put them in a bag and started to say the price, Both of the brothers kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

I walked away very confused and never actually having gotten the chance to ask them about the pre-Twoism albums. Fuck.
If The Campfire Headphase was a butterfly, would Acid Memories be the caterpillar?
Spoiler: show
Unfortunately I have no clue lmao. But while you're here, go ahead and check out some of my tunes! You might dig 'em and stuff!

Lmao, weird! FlyLo is known to do this too. It must be some kind of Warp ritual or something ;)

I just feel ripped off when they show us the albums that we can never hear. All artists have early material that they never release, but to give detailed information about all of it, and even audio clips, and never give us the full thing is pretty low. Especially for people like me who dearly love the lofi beauty of their early stuff.

I understand and I know how you feel. Whatever the reason was back then, I think they feel like it was a mistake now. There has been no mention of the whole thing since they took it down.

Mdg's mentioned them a couple times, does that count?

I can't remember in what context, so I don't know.

The way I feel about this topic changes very regularly. I tell myself that they are the artists and it's their right to give us whatever music they want, and they might have felt that is was a mistake for them to ever put the pre-twoism albums on the site in the first place. But then I question why they don't just tell us that the pre-twoism work won't be released if it was a mistake. They've been known about for an incredibly long time, It feels like their should be at least some sort of closure on the matter :? If BoC wish to just forget about the records, that's fine. But it doesn't seem particularly fair on a very dedicated fanbase that holds their music in such high regards to leave them hanging on the fate of these releases for so many years. I only get hot headed about this subject because BoC's music means A LOT to me, it's helped me through some tough times. So the possibility of listening to these records is like a 'dream come true' so to speak.

But even if they never see the light of day I will remain incredibly thankful for the music they have released :)

I doubt they have any deep regret regarding those albums, because I think they (or an official at Warp) mentioned the possibility of reissues with redone artwork. I think BoC just take a long time to get things done and they don't like to give updates on what they're up to.

not totally sure why, I just don't like 1969 at all. Same with julie and candy, but not as much so. I much prefer their lo-fi old tunes.

If I were to say the worst thing they ever did, I think it would be putting dayvan cowboy on trans-ch.
