You can't really argue with what other people like or don't like, but I just wanna say that I love zoetrope. Perfect ending for that ep, I can't imagine it without it.

I do like someone's description of it as "gently boring" though. Maybe it kind of is, but in a dreamy way. It's got a really calming but abstract feeling for me.

I don't really care for Zander Two. It kind of sounds like a little kid jamming on his new casio.

i think there is more to it than that. they said they had tons of tracks they could have used on geogaddi, they could have tinkered with one of those and made them fit into that space.


i think there is something going on in that silence that nobody has picked up on yet. there is def. a reason for it.

I'd imagine after handing their painstakingly produced and sequenced 22 track album to the label, the last thing they'd want to do would be shoe-horn an existing track on there simply because it was the right length.

On the LP, Magic Window consists of an entire silent side on the vinyl with the etching of a family. The track is definitely part of the album, it's very deliberate. The only thing that was incidental was the length of the track, which was suggested by Warp and BOC agreed with. But the track was meant to be there from the start, and the absolute silence is the whole point.

Take a look at what this page talks about "magic windows" (use CTRL+F). There's a good probability that BOC were referring to that. So, in a way, the track could represent a portal to another world.

Do you mean the one on Mask 200 or the one on the Old Tunes tape? I think the Mask 200 one is quite swell, but I can definitely agree with you on the Old Tunes one...

i think plenty of people have picked up on the reason for magic window, but you're not going to find it by turning up the volume really loud or studying a spectrogram. the *idea* of magic window is what's interesting. the idea of ending an album with silence, with that blank space to think about the album before descending back into your regular life, and with that intriguing title, is really bold and interesting. just like how "zoetrope" is a really bold and interesting way to end an EP even if musically it's by far not their greatest achivement. but i think some people get frustrated by these tracks because they're not tapped into the concept that sometimes the idea of a thing is more interesting that the thing itself.

its similar for me with Farewell Fire a beautiful track but not their best..but a beautiful way to end an album...although it sounds weird the ending tracks of BoC releases are always favorites...just...I mean 1936 summer fire is by far the best track on twoism (next to sixtyniner)

I used to hate Zoetrope as well, to the extent that I didn't touch the EP much at all, but one day I noticed that I was well getting into it. Now I think it's just as amazing as any of the other tracks. It's an odd thing, it often happens that I start loving tracks which I used to hate - like many times with Aphex's Selected Ambient Works 2 for example (though I think, I will never get into #15.. hahah).

I wouldn't mind Magic Window otherwise, but it's pretty dull listening to the two minutes of silence just to hear the Japanese bonus track. Especially when I'm out biking or something and just don't feel like reaching the phone in my pocket to press skip. It breaks the flow. I'm so used to ending the album with From One Source that I can't imagine Corsair doing that.

Happy Cycling is a track I could live without. It's listenable but the beat sounds pretty goofy to my ears. And for some irritating reason I always associate the track with this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ps6wRHFdKdA#t=35s I love Kraftwerk but I don't want them to loop in my head when I'm listening to Boards.

I think Magic Window is absolutely essential. For me, Corsair will always be the "real" closing track of the album, and From One Source... works as a nice afterthought. Sort if like when you might get an extra piece of footage after the credits in a film, and Magic Window is those credits, and the thing just wouldn't work for me if it wasn't there.
