I'm a fan of BoC as opposed to an IDM fan in general, and I know BoC's past wishes regarding this material. Their wishes were that no one gets to hear them, at least for the moment.

Yet you listen to them. You must be indifferent about BoC's wishes for their work.

It's not some mystery man flogging these tapes, it's Mike Paranidas. If BoC have a problem with him selling the tapes then they can give him a ring and say "Hey Mike, it's the other Mike, listen can you not do that please?" We have no idea whether or not this has happened. We don't even know if BoC have given their assent to this auction.

One thing we do know for sure is that BoC don't want people listening to low quality illegal bootleg copies of their juvenilia. You listen to them, yet you are prepared to condemn someone legally selling the original tapes, even though you don't know the facts behind the sale.

That makes you a massive hypocrite. Either stop expressly disobeying (in hushed tones) The Brothers wishes and delete your illegal, unauthorized, explicitly forbidden copies of their music, or stop having such double standards.

This is exactly right!~!!!~~

This situation is really and truly like having a political thread in BoC form. Almost everyone feels strongly one way or another and the shades of gray make it so that almost everyone feels they have the right answer/philosophy.

My personal stance is that as a fan that considers themselves a non-collector (you'll never see me turn up in the "collection thread") I've got no jealousy over the fact that someone will pay an exorbitant sum for these tapes. I'd just prefer that if these changed hands, they'd be gifted to a friend and not sold. Not realistic, but whatever.

Ultimately it would be nice to have this thread locked so that someone associated with a second tier IDM label can't steal all the way attention from the people who should be receiving it right now. This thread is just going to be an ongoing series of "I'm right, and this is why" followed by someone else saying the same thing, rinse repeat.

You're right. The users of this forum have stuff that is so much more important to be doing. Like expressing their insane fanboyism for this band in the most utterly creepy way possible.

I don't understand why it matters how they change hands to you. It seems a bit fetishistic to elevate them above commerce, as if they are the Ossuary of the bones of Jesus Christ rather than a set of cassette tapes. But hey, at least we agree that we both like the music.

A bit out of order to insult the label and by extension the artists on it. There are some incredibly talented musicians on Planet Mu. What happened to being respectful to artists? Or does that only apply to one particular set of artists?

a forum-fight?! WHERE?! In HERE?!

Image

Heated, respectful, forum-debate = enriching awesomeness!

Insulting, hateful, forum-argument/fight = unattractive uninterestingness!

Don't ever respond to this stuff friends. Bring enlightenment to another topic instead.

Resist the urge to spend your precious, temporary time here retaliating or defending yourself.

Weird vicious cycles...

Its like when a community starts becoming a closer-knit-family, people feel together as one and it feels great. Be careful tho, people can then want to foster/encourage group-think to feel it again. At that point any independent critical thought going against the hive-mind is easily mistaken as a sign of offense against the family. Danger!

Protect your fellow humans right of cognitive-liberty at all times friends!

P.S. ...carebear haters got no soul. FACT.
"And people like The Bird Lady here, they devote a tremendous amount of their time and energy to taking care of these creatures, and shes not paid, she does all this out of her own pocket. The world needs people like that, they're special, very special." - Bob Ross

sweepstake on the final bid? I'm thinking around 1500 each for the AFOTs - i don' think BM would fetch more than 300.

Totally aside from the music, if you were purely in it for the investment, I don't think this would be a sound bet.

I mean i've cash tied up in savings and shares, if i felt these would gain steadily for 10-20 yrs i'd be tempted on that basis (since i couldn't possibly justify it on a fan basis, far too self-indulgent) I think a huge amount rides on whether these recieved an official release and whether in years to come BoC still have a strong collectors market which they currently do. It'd be very very risky

edit: considering the current bid on Boc Maxima i think i'm a bit out on that one!
We had a dream last night. We had the same dream.

It's strange. To some people, these are some kind of holy grail of Boards of Canada collecting. Often talked about, but rarely actually seen. The way they are described on things like wikipedia, it's doubtful whether they actually exist, but here they are. And do you know what, they don't look that exciting at all. A couple of cassetes, which could be any old cassete they had lying around at the time, and an inlay that looks photo-copied. Of course what is on them, is brilliant, but we've got the music anyway.

I'd love to have them, but they're not worth that much to me.

I dunno, I'm pretty sure I got an erection when I saw Boc Maxima.
