I was thinking to myself, "Strings? What?" then the massive drone sound kicks in - "whoa, shit."

Honestly though, that was the highlight of the track for me. It really has an atmosphere to it, but I don't think it's a classic. I can definitely see how one reviewer said something along the lines of the band using atmosphere itself as an instrument, and I can agree for sure.

Sorry it's just a tease, but here's a bit of video/audio from Gemini. What an ominous, attention grabbing opener!

Judging by the number of references to Sunn O))) I'm guessing I'm not the only one thinking 'that' rumbling tone/drone isn't a synth. Has to be guitar that's been downtuned/slowed/twisted, right??

Yeah, I would question if there's much synth in there at all, but it's hard to tell from the recordings we have now.

It's a very fine line between synthesizer and a guitar effects pedal board. A lot of the beauty in the timbre Boards of Canada comes up with is that it is just beyond ascertainable as a particular instrument. This is also one the fundamental glorious qualities of old synthesizers... they were not especially good at recreating sounds of existing instruments, but made new and better ones as a side effect.

It does sound like the basis of the drone is a string instrument, but def being played with a bow. Ppl are right that it probably a cello , although it might be an open D* string on an upright bass or something.

The synth part definitely reminds me of Jean Michael Jarre's "Oxygene No. II". Sorry if people hate me for that comparison. I love that album and it is awesome to hear it channeled and quasi-modernized as Gemini sounds to me.

I love that little burst of noise at the beginning of the track that someone compared to a 70's children's tv show theme. I remember reading an interview somewhere where BoC said they loved the sound of the short music that plays when a logo pops up on a screen before an informational movie of PSA. That little blip captures that sound perfectly.

Sunn O))) live is an incredible experience. Definitely go if you get a chance.

And yes, a show with BoC would be an amazing dream come true.

new single leak ...

Image

i kid. been sitting here at my computer desk riding this great wave of BOC activity and forgot this guy keeps me company just a few inches from my monitor. the Gemini track for me was an immediate and literal connection. i grew up across the Indian River just a few miles from Pad 39A watching most shuttle launches but am really a fan of the Mercury/ GEMINI/ Apollo days.

i close my eyes and see a night launch - Collins and Young sitting atop a lit-up Titan. waiting, thinking. this song is already a treasure for me ...
