I think you should go ahead with it until you hear otherwise. I'll donate to you, I will buy official copies of this music if it ever comes into existence as well. We're a bunch of diehards here, I can't say everyone would do the same, but I think a lot of people would. The BoC fanbase has become its own community and I'd like to think that many of us would do what we could to help our own regardless of any carrot being dangled...

So, if we can agree on a bit of a mass-consensus (literally, pennies would be GREAT, we need every cent that comes our way...) I will gladly do that. Maybe just put the PayPal link in my "signature" at the bottom of the page.

Just curious, wouldn't something like this need to be approved by boards of canada first? I understand people get in binds and need cash, but maybe you guys should all back off until we know if this is approved by the brothers.

Understood. But, the tracks are out there. What's leaking a better version going to do? Have more people enjoy them? Probably not. It's probably going to be the same people who have wished they had a good version. It's a donation, it's not a purchase. I'm not demanding money, I'm just asking. And, all this work is inevitably going to lead to one teenage kid with a mantra of "f*ck the system" putting this up somewhere else for download.
I'd love to ask Mike and Marcus first, believe me. I just don't exactly have their phone number handy...

Correct me if I am wrong, but haven't they said that these tapes were never supposed to be heard by the masses in the first place? I was also under the impression that they were going to release some old material themselves. I understand you are asking for donations, which means not everyone has to contribute to hear the music. The core issue is it's not your music to sell. Again, that is just my opinion and I realize I could be wrong. All you have to do is ask MDG what he thinks and maybe wait for his response, so boards of canada gets the respect they deserve. Thanks.

Because, look, my dad has cancer. Not just that, but the treatment is so intense he's thinking about quitting. I will NOT lose my father. If there is anything I can do (and this is something I CAN do), I'm going to do it.

The tapes have been sold on eBay, ripped for online use, etc. I'm not demanding money, again, I'm simply asking. I'm providing a service FREE OF CHARGE, but I would VERY MUCH appreciate some money for our extensive bills, even if it's just pocket change.

Well, I mean, there have been remasters in the past, right? Just because I'm using different source material doesn't really make a difference in theory... Well, anyways, you definitely are correct. It's obviously just a bit of an emotional time and, I'm having the tapes remastered anyway, so, I mean, it's just a matter of sharing. How can I contact MDG?

That ship sailed about 10 years ago and the morality/legality/imagined desires of the band have been discussed ad infinitum ever since and both sides have their points.

The Old Tunes era is one of my favorite things to discuss and of all their old releases, I think these are the ones least likely to ever be released officially in their current form. There are some real gems on them but the amount of juvenilia and samples that would need to be cleared would be more of a headache than it's worth. I like to think that Catalog 3 through Hooper Bay are their more serious releases from that era and (based on R35TT) probably have less sampling concerns as well. I think the most you could ever hope for is a "Best of OTV" type compilation with the best bits (and least troublesome tracks from a licensing perspective)

In this case, I'd love to see this project released, but no direct mention of the Paypal donations should be referenced on the download page to keep everything kosher. It should be its own thing, and if the project brings attention to her dad's situation on here and people choose to donate, that's great. Something in the OPs signature would probably be the way to go, like she said. I know I will donate and I think a lot of other people are drinking the Kool-Aid here too. If it's approached as a fan who brought a very cool project to light is also in need, some people will do the right thing.
