And yeah i just got acquainted with everything that happened since i was out of the loop. I must admit that this is not comforting. The merch is very basic and Warp Records could have created it without the assistance of anyone from Hexagone Sun (I'm not even positive that the promotional art was photographed by Peter Campbell). The message on the website is most likely from an administrator rather than the brothers, but what does that tell us ? It indicates that the brothers have been on radio silence for so long now, that even their contacts are beginning to believe they are permanently retired and are now pulling the plug. So now they shut down the site that they know will never be used again and Warp is milking the last drop of the fans with some shirts.

Let's be real, you don't use the phrase "nobody's home" to promote something to a community that has been waiting for more than 12 years. Unless you want to say that we are waiting for nothing, it makes no sense. Folks, this might be it.

Frankly, I'm perfectly okay with them retiring, tho I beg to be proven wrong. TH was, in my opinion, the ideal album to wrap up BOC. And it's fortunate, in my opinion, that Warps artists have moved on from what Wrap turned into. Let's eb honest both the record and the IDM is not what it used to, and most of nowadays electronic/braindance innovations are happening elsewhere. If I'm correct, though, I'll say however that I'm disappointed that they don't at least release all of their older songs like Richard did, make a statement or a little plus rather than just pulling a random morse code.

Going away is always fine. But going away in an awkward silence feels a bit disrespectfull, tho not out of character for Boards Of Canada. Sorry if i sound pessimestic, i'm trying my best not to ruin the mood.

Counterpoint: Both a new album and a 'Bocset' of older material is in the works. I strongly belive this is the case...

1) Rest assured the brothers sign off on the design. MDG confirmed this earlier when he talked about the old merch.

2) The only thing that site change means is that this site is not actively used anymore. Does that surprise us? Not really, it's a 12 year old Tomorrow's Harvest ARG asset. This has imo nothing to do with any forthcoming music. I can only hope they don't feel the need to rehash an old website to promote new work. I believe they have more creativity in them based on what they've shown us in their 3 decades spanning career.

5) A few very important things you missed in your essay: MDG confirming there will be a new album in 2022 and 38 "new album" likes on their official Instagram in 2025. If these events aren't hopeful enough, I suggest having a look at the follow overview:

Nobody’s home. All these new accounts popping up on social media are Warp. Sure, there may well be old unreleased material given to us, but even that’s a long shot. A very long shot. Maybe when they die? Who knows?

It would be embarrassing for them to release another album now.

You’ve got to appreciate that they ‘could’ even regret releasing music commercially in the first place. Or that they see no point in doing so anymore? Like they tried to get their point across sonically and it fell on death ears and all that fans wanted was more more more! You’ve got to appreciate the possibility. They may just feel so indifferent to their old listeners.

I mean… it’s ridiculous and embarrassing to have YouTubers create videos entitled ‘6 ways to sound like Boards of Canada’ or copycat artists like cult 48 who tried their hardest to have people believe it was a BoC project on the side. It all sounded dreadful and will have no staying power in 20 years time. That’s the great thing about their music. It will last through the ages.

I read one post on Reddit the other day by someone who was awestruck by the fact that early BoC was made without computers or the internet. They question that they must have been some sort of geniuses to figure it all out by themselves. That’s the sort of dumbed down naivety we’re talking about.

I often feel that the greatest art can take its toll on people. Often born from mental health issues or outsiders / neglected people. People that are trying to deal with some sort of enormity. If that has been the case for these guys, then I wish them a very peaceful and happy retirement. I hope they’ve taken on new hobbies and interests by now.

I mean when have you ever seen them act like that, or have others act like that on their behalf? They may be secretive but they are not dicks. And then to allow their only public representative (MDG) to confirm a few times that both a new album and BOCset are in the works. Then to release a whole line of brand new Merch, purely to what, capitalize on their retirement?

Don't get me wrong, I get that it's cool to be both negative and sure of yourself online, but literally nothing points towards them going into retirement right now, in fact quite the opposite.

I can't tell if this forum is full of unreasonably negative fans, or if it's just bots that have learnt how to do the whole "BoC never" thing.

BoC have been cooking, this is confirmed. I'm baffled there's so much denial here. On Instagram or Reddit where fans don't know what's going on, sure that makes sense. But on Twoism? We're meant to be the patient ones in the know, who aren't blind to BoC's breadcrumbs. Of which there are many, all indicating new music/art is being worked on. We know it is happening, we just don't know when.
