Although I recall this quote being slightly different the first time I read it, it really stuck with me because I'm pretty sure I knew this already even before reading the article. I've had some pretty crazy sleep experiences, night terrors and a lot of vivid lucid dreams. When you're actually trying to achieve lucidity while dreaming, or in my case it just happened by accident at first, there's this thing that can happen in between the states of waking and sleep called sleep paralysis during which auditory and even visual hallucinations are quite common. This is usually accompanied by a general feeling of unease and vulnerability, but can escalate to full on terror depending on what kind of hallucinations you're having. Considering that while it's happening you are still mostly conscious but are barely able to move, if at all, it can be truly horrific experience for some people if you let your imagination run away with you.

What really got me is that the first time I listened to Geogaddi and heard Gyroscope, I was immediately reminded and similarly spooked. I'd never heard anything else even come close to an accurate reproduction of such auditory hallucinations. Then I read the quote, and was incredibly affected to find out that may have actually been what it was meant to sound like.

Gyroscope, along with other songs like Basefree and You Could Feel the Sky, have these very unusual and sometimes haunting beat tracks, and it makes me wonder if that is indeed where they derived the inspiration. I find it incredibly cool and interesting. The dreamt/hallucinated sounds I've experienced are usually very distinct, unsettling, arrhythmic noises. Things like rushing water, loud sharp cracks, strange distorted voices, my name being said in a loud whisper right next to my ear... you see how it can get creepy. It fits in just right with the tone and themes of Geogaddi, and it's my favourite album for that reason. I actually find it kind of morbidly comforting.

Sorry for the wall of text, but I just had to express how this was one of the things that happened back in the day that really made me realize how and why their work resonates with me so much. Even beyond the nostalgia it evokes, it's the first time I ever remember music being able to reach into my subconscious like that and strike a personal chord. It completely changed the way I thought about music.

The very beginning of Dead Sea by Plaid (the brief loud high pitched staticy ringing sound at about 0:15-0:19) also sounds exactly like a sleep paralysis event from my childhood that somehow involved inverted pyramids, an overview of terrain in the dark and the most extreme feeling of loss and despair possible. That beginning sound is an exact replica of what I heard ringing loud in my ears the whole time.

Oh wow, yeah, that definitely captures the weird stingy sharpness of it. Now that I think about it almost all of my experiences with SP have started with a similar kind of ringing. Like the same kind that happens when your ears ring randomly for no reason (tinnitus or whatever?)

Basefree really captures the creepy distorted voices for me too (starts in at around 0:26) and the beat is even more panicky and random. And for the first little bit there is nothing but basically those two noises going on, that completely nails it.

It's strange how dreams can really amplify feelings like that. I think some of the times I've been most emotional were during or just after waking up from some sort of horrible (or occasionally, really happy) dream.
