John peel commented that their ability to plan far a head in terms of buissness is "most impressive".
At best your making some educated guesses, but don't confuse their "myth" with reality.
Agreed.
Has anyone actually met Mike and Marcus, not BoC, but Mike and Marcus. Just because you've read some interviews doesn't mean you know who they are personally.

My "educated guess" is one that has been formed from the simple observations I've made of BoC's utter refusal to sell out in any way, shape or form. They've only done one (as far as I know) music video, they refuse a lot of interview requests and they keep their most treasured and early recordings entirely to themselves. They don't whore out iTunes artist of the month shit and offer for sale things like Boards of Canada coffee mugs on their website for 3x more than their worth, and if they did, fans wouldn't buy them because their fanbase is almost entirely composed of intellectual, unique people whose musical influences (many are also artists), opinions and interests are of non-mainstream, non-mediocre freethinking original base points. They don't start up some bullshit court case over the name "Twoism" and they spend years on end creating music to ensure both the quality and diversity of it is of values equally or more impressive than the last.
To me, every point shows them leaning further towards art than business by far, and the fact they've not released some placeholder throwaway album in the mean time makes it pretty clear they aren't extremely concerned with a financial surplus.

So by that logic, their "utter refusal to sell out" directly helps them to sell records to their target market and any change in this atitude would be to the detriment of their sales and fanbase. That would be quite convenient for people that dont care about the buissness side of things.

don't fool yourself, if they put ANYTHING up for sale on their website, it would be sold out on day 1, maybe in hour 1. some of your description of boc fans is accurate, but you forgot to add obsessive and delusional. and yes, i am a fan.

2 Officially Released Music Videos - Dayvan Cowboy and Invoaction both directed by Melissa Olson
Commercials that feature BoC Music: BMW, Nissan which used 5-9-78,Telecom and Liberty Mutual
Countless TV shows/Promos that feature BoC Music: Cartoon Network, 6 Feet Under, Top Gear ect.
Now on the scale of Mainstream Artists? That is small potatoes. Boards of Canada is not a household name. And that's why my 89 Year Old Grandmother knows who Lady Gaga is and NOT BoC.

And those people shouldn't be buying BoC merch, they should be at Abercrombie buying shitty pants.

your idealized vision of boards of canada fans is nice, but maybe a bit off.
if there were no market for this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/v410-Boards-Canada-Stainless-Steel-Watch-New-Cool-NR-/180649022967?pt=Wristwatches&hash=item2a0f8555f7
then items like it would not exist.
so boc fans, shitty pants and shitty watches then?
