I don't think anything will top that storm and it was so annoying because those tracks are objectively good in either form. If they did that now it wouldn't be such a big deal (Kelela being signed to Warp really did some much-needed eye-opening for some people), but the 2010's were still filled with a lot of snobbery about cross-genre like that.

Controversial view of mine but Slow This Bird Down seems very empty to me. It was nice of Solange to actually make it less barren by singing over it. I feel it's no different than the remixes in that case

My long suffering girlfriend (from having to date a BOC nerd) remarked that she was surprised when she heard this remix and it was "Eminem rap" XD

People who hate BOC's dabblings with rap should realize that they like rap/hip-hop (or at least the indie-rap variety) I mean Eagle In Your Mind contains record scratching for crying out loud.

Lol. So the lyrics to the hook are “DREAMING LIKE A PROSTITUTE” according to this article. https://spectrumculture.com/2016/02/04/ ... -nevermen/

You can hear a “droopy” intonation—and there‘a no hard T, like there is in “treat.” Anyone able to find accurate Nevermen lyrics to this? I’m not having much luck.

I think we just assumed it was "treat" because the track is called Treat'em right. but now I cannot unhear "dreaming".

Treat em like a prostitute
Dreaming like a prostitute
Feeling like a prostitute

Who knows what they're really saying anyway?
I can't tell.

Also want to shout out the cool piano part that is playing the Open the Light arpeggio a whole step down (for the last chord in the progression (where the other elements drop out, and then the loop starts again)). This isn’t the piano from the Web Loops version of the track. Is it safe to assume they recorded this later on in the process?

Probably why they chose these lyrics/track. BOC thrive off of ambiguous sounds and noises and with the remixes, lyrics.

I absolutely love this remix and the "Mr. Mistake" remix. Although I gotta say, this doesn't sound like a BoC remix but rather a Hell Interface remix.

BoC remixes are always my favorite of their works (Dead Dogs Two remix is my favorite song of all time), and while this isn't at that level it's still super good. As much as I love their solo work (I feel like it looks like I think their normal stuff pales in comparison, it doesn't), I'm just endlessly fascinated and impressed with how they work with vocals, particularly becos they literally make a new instrumental entirely. So, listening to the OG, then their remix is a real window into how they hear music for me.
Gotta love the boys releasing this instead of an album tho, really treatin us like a prostitute rn

Not just indie rap. In the "Boards of the Underground" interview with Richard Southern they cite Wu Tang Clan as an influence and say RZA "listens like they do."

Wu-Tang Clan have one of the most popular rap albums for music nerds so I'm not surprised BOC cited them as an influence.

All their rap remixes seem to be indie rap, however, and all of the rap groups are also part of a single collective much like Hex Sun.

I've also realized that all four remixes, post-TH, seem to be favors or requests for their favorite artists or friends. As Statpow pointed out, they really haven't released anything for the fanbase, only people who truly matter to them. And that's fine since we get to hear these "musical favors," and each was delightful. If remixing friends' music keeps them creating, I'm all for it.

It's been stuck in my head all day, absolutely fantastic, this tune is gonna tie me over for a few months before I start clammering for the next album again.

Go listen to Magic Window then, fucker.

Wow, why the animosity? I was just speaking my mind. I'm a diehard BOC fan, bought the original Hi Scores EP on the day of release in 1996 and haven't looked back since. But that doesn't mean I can't not like some of their stuff. Chill on the aggressiveness.

Meee! I bought on iTunes and bandcamp already—anything to give back to BOC :)

I asked Lex on Twitter about it—they liked it, and that one guy replied with his write up on the remix. They might have said something if they had info, but I think it’s fair to say they are working on this 20th anny remix compilation.

they're really skilled at remixing also checking all their work like midas touch, cat soup or sisters to notice how widely range is the style spectrum.

for this even not my favourite Is a great track, classic 80s funky step merged with open the light. Didn't know that patton was on nevermen but nice shit, as always. good job bros

Aquarius minus the pads and the numbers.
Boc's remix work as always influenced me more than their album work really.
Less constrained in a way.

I hear the Aquarius similarities! I think one thing that feels "unlike BOC" is the staccato rhythm. It isn't until the chorus parts that the bell synth and strings start to create that signature BOC drone. It's a beautifully restrained track. I really love that part when the chorus goes back into the main groove and the strings do that 16th note muting/pulsing thing.

Also, that distorted synth at 1:02...anyone getting that Cold Earth crashing synth (at 1:54 of Cold Earth) vibe? There's no delay on it, but they use the synth in the same way, as it crashes into the track. "Dreamin like a prostitute" BA DA BA DING DA BA ("yeah, that's right!"). After all they did say they spent like $10k on that synth, and it only made that 1 second moment in Cold Earth!

thank youuuuuu

it has always rubbed me the wrong way how mercilessly people reacted to her essentially having fun and paying homage to a group she has stated she is very fond of and inspired by.

After hearing Kelela & Asmara's Aquaphoria mixtape for WXAXRXP (which ran right before Sociatas X!) I could imagine more stuff like that happening. BOC manipulating Kelela's voice could be incredible but I won't keep my hopes up

new remix is fun btw, definitely get the aquarius feeling and i dig that
