Old Tunes Vol. 1 Gems

I think there is allot of junk on this one, but there are several gems that should be re-issued (if this will even happen) The greatest tracks are 6 from side A, and 12 from side B. 6 is beautiful and also very unnerving with the screams and noises appearing in it. 12 has such a beautiful melody, reminiscent of twoism, but the drum loop lacks somewhat. Track 3A is also fun, along with 14A and 9B. What about you guys?

i dont know why exactly, but i really do love track 09 on side A. the layered synths and the echoes, the filtering of it, makes me think of being high up on a mountain...allllmost at the top. it just sounds like it should play in a movie when someone is juuuust about there, but reaching, reaching....like whatever it is ther are reaching for is almost at grasp, and as the song progresses, its just a bit closer.
also track 15 on A. lovely, lovely, lovely, like a warm bubble bath. (i think it also appears on A Few Old Tunes Side B as "i will get it tattooed". anyway. its like a bubblebath and then sunlight coming in the window, kinda blinding your eyes momentarily.
track 03 on side B really does its job of weirding me out very well. they did a great job on making one creepy-ass track. sounds like the soundtrack to mold growing in a dark closet. or a clogged sink, just sitting there, being gross and clogged. lolol.
track 05 on side B makes me think of riding on the escalator at the mall when i was a kid. also of bright lights. clear light bulbs. round ones, kind of an off white light. reflecting on gold.
(this is so funny, i've never just listened to tracks and described in real time what those tracks are making me think of...now that i now how fun this is, i think i'll be back on this site more often...)
(typed the above while listening to track 07 side B) <-- which makes me feel very lighthearted and happy about things. what a bright and sunny, chipper song.
track 08 on side B i thoroughly enjoy. as well as 09. i think 07, 08, and 09 are in a really nice sequence. 07 is so sunny, 08 so somber and funeral bells and dark forest, and then 09 comes dancing in, funky and fresh, shining and bouncing.
15, side B, is just so interesting. oranges, mustard yellows. kinda diagonal.
and 20, well that sounds like the most perfect 70s pbs interlude music i've ever heard...totally takes me back to watching tv as a kid in the early 80's.
thank u and goodnight.

No B12? I would have to say that track touches me, to say the least.

I'd pick out those I renember...
9B: I renember this from Cupz's Funn And Slog cartoon. One of the tracks that made me interested in BoC.
9A: Hell, I didn't like this one that much the first time I heard it, but it has seriously grown on me. I love it.
8A: I always think of Aphex when I hear it. Dunno why. It's not that similiar to him.

But hey, the drums are awesome! Would be funny if BoC reused them just one more time. Just once more!
7B: Gotta be my favorite OTV1 track of all time. The drums are catchy, the melody is kinda funny, and it makes me happy! I always think of machines when I hear it. Mass producing something in brown boxes.
13A: It's a neat little treat as well, but I don't have much to say about it.
3A: Awesome.
2B: Beeeeow! Choo chukkachukk
5B: I really like the drums on this one. It's a funny track with the melody. Thumbs up.
20B: Great ending of a great album. Two thumbs up.
But it's hard to choose really. Everything on Old Tunes Vol. 1 is pretty much awesome.

Good picks, we're thinking some of the same things here. Here's some of my thoughts:
A6 is wonderful, so ghostly. Haunting.
A13 is an interesting one, it's got a thick slowness, like being trapped in amber.
A14 is fun, you have to love the simplicity of it as it starts.
A8 is sort of like 13A in reverse; pulsing nearly mechanism rhythm eventually joined by a lovely simply melody line.
B3 is another nice creepy, mysterious one.
B5 is so evocative; it just SOUNDS like a kalediscope, or a prism; colors, shapes, rays of light cascading and reflecting in complex geometry patterns.
B7, heh. This is like a clever little Pixar short or something. Such humor in this.
B8 - pure goofy cheeseball fun. Got to love the non-subtle stereo effects.
B20 is the one very important thought for the tapes: "hope you had fun listening to this, we had fun making it"
Overall the coolest thing about the old tunes is the sense of intimacy and immediacy. Every track is an experiment and you can follow the progress of the band as they come up with key elements that were honed to perfection by the time they put out their more public works. As well as some other curious avenues that may yet show up in the future.

Are you saying this is a "cover" of a bit of music from an old kids show? Or just that it reminds you of that style?
Oh wait; do you mean it was used as background music for some webcomic/flash animation?

Yep, great little collection.
A6 does it for me. Really dark. I think it was used again (as many of their tracks are) in one of the Website Island tracks. Can't remember which one.
I'm also listenin to A8 which samples the beat from U-ziqs Dauphine.
I can sort of understand why they wouldn't release this stuff though. It's good and of real intrigue for BOC fans like us but doesn't hold up against their releases. If I was Mike and Marcus I would prefer someone younger coming to the band through MHTRTC or Geogaddi etc and not really this stuff.

About 12 months back i got really hooked on the old tunes.
I listened to them most days for several months.
Then all of a sudden i just stopped and moved onto other stuff.
Just reading this topic has got me listening again and has reminded me just
how great they really are.
I think side B is the best...
B2, B4, B7, B9, B11 (awesome!) , B12, B14, B15, B16
I just wish i knew the real track titles..!
I would call B11 'Awesome'
Does anyone suppose they have any titles or is it maybe the brothers didnt give them any..?

A6 is a thing of beauty. Makes me wish I was imortal so I will always hear music like that! Unless heaven can hook me up.

Mind you on OT Vol 2 A 'Mukhinabaht' is also pretty amazing. What i wanna know is when are we gonna get boxed-set'd up?

well look at it this way. We arent exactly falling over stacks of BoC releases so anything that comes out is welcome. And when its assured quality like OT then everyones a winner. Why wouldnt you like it to be released?

I would love it to be released officially..
It would answer all sorts of questions..
For instance..
Has anyone considered when the old tunes where originally made..?
Do we recon they are before or after Catalog3 (1987)..?

The inset for AFOT says it was recorded between 1991 and 1995 and OTv2 says "(C) 1996"
Personally I'd love to just know the names of all these tracks (as well as the unreleased live stuff).
