BMI repertoire search: New/mysterious tracktitles!

Wed Nov 26, 2008 3:07 am

BMI, the company that collects license fees on behalf of musical artists, keeps a searchable database online of copyrighted material by registered artists.

I did a search on the Sandisons and a few interesting, unknown song titles came up.

These are: Blueberry, Flute Frum Thing, It's Too Orangey, Sdesis, Woice099 (alternate title Woice Zero Ninety Nine). And there's Nissan Statistics, but I think we all know what that is.

Can't really find anything on these titles by using Google and music websites, except for It's Too Orangey, Everything2.com says this:

Too Orangey for Crows

A late 80s television advertisement for Kia-Ora on British TV featured an animated cartoon character walking along swigging the drink. The commercial was a moment of inspired surrealism, as the character was followed by Looney Tunes-style cartoon characters, notably large crows in zoot suits requesting a drink.

"Hey mister, can I have some of your Kia-Ora ?"
"No, it's too orangey for crows. It's just for me and my dog"
"I'll be your dog!"

Cue jingle: We all adore-a, Kia-Ora

A wonderful, insane, magnificent example of advertising at the height of the 80s yuppy boom.

Wouldn't be surprised at all if Boards Of Canada sampled this.

Are these tracks music written by the Sandisons under an alias? Are these track titles of a new EP copyrighted in advance? Or what?

Research and discuss!

nice one

Radical!

The Kia-Ora ad is here: http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=5LvLn9PWln8

I guess the name of the track was just a reference to it. I didn't even know it was the name of a drink, here in New Zealand we use it as a greeting. The other tracks could be ones they've only performed live, you can get royalties for performing your own song.
Anyway, good find!

I wonder if these are some of the tunes that played on their old website (the one before the island navigation system)

You might be onto something there. Hold on though don't those tracks already have names? YEah, Timeapple, Gann, etc.

I thought the bits from the Telecom Italia track maybe... It's tempting to think they were live tracks but it seems unlikley.

I was surpised that Trapped was in but not Midas Touch.

Also what happened with 1986 Summer Fire? Did they forget? Was it liceneced seperately on a compliation or something? Come to think of it how do we know what that track was called? As an un-named bonus track what's the source of the title we've been using?

It's listed there, second entry on the BMI page I linked, and the title is official, as you can see it on the Twoism info page in the discography on the official site.

EPIC find!

You should make an item on the bocpages wiki about this!

Wed Nov 26, 2008 11:45 pm

Nice! Maybe these are names for yet to be released tracks, they just got in early to copyright them incase anyone else used them. (As unlikely as Fruit Frum Thing seems...)

Wed Nov 26, 2008 11:55 pm

Somebody suggested live songs and that sounds more viable to me.

Thu Nov 27, 2008 11:56 am

1986 Summer Fire copyrighted AFTER their last EP? Fuck. Potentially amazing news.

Though sampling the Kia-Ora track is something I can see them doing in the Old Tunes era, and not now.

Thu Nov 27, 2008 12:34 pm

Yeah, no, I didn't mean it wasn't there. I mean it's number lists it as coming after, long after, all the other Twoism stuff. It's like they forgot to register it with BMI and then remembered suddenly last year sometime.

Too right about the website listing though, thanks.

Sampling the Ki-Ora ad, now, would be wheeling sky-high over the shark in a spangly cape, if you ask me. Unless, they're doing the music for a new Ki-Ora advert! 8) I'll be your dog!

Nice find. I'm curious whether we ever find out what tracks these are.
