what are some good memories that you have tied to Board of Canada's music...

past or present...

for me a lot of the times their music takes me back to when i was younger and our school would take field trips to the omni theater... this was around the mid 80's and i just remember the screen being so over powering and their was always this incredible story being told. of course there was the warbbly analog sound track that played along with it, and images of nature, wildlife, and outerspace towering above me.

it also reminds me of sesame street on a rainy day...when you couldn't go out and play but you were glued to the tv with numbers and colors flashing in front of you only to break for commercials that plunk out the analog sounding music of the time...

i can also relate them to current memories but some how they still feel so nostalgic. like everytime i listen to geogaddi i am taken back to exact moment where i first heard it...there alot of memories of the fall that relate to TCH...taking hikes in the woods by my house when the leaves are changing all the while being taken on an even further journey while TCH blares through my headphones...

i could on and on about this stuff...anyone else got some stories...i know you do...

Playing with my best friends on warm summer evenings just before dusk... BoC's best output leaves me remembering events that may or may not have happened.

My experience with BoC is that their music brings me back memories of things that i heard or saw growing up in the 80's; some specific memories:
- when i attended an American kindergarten in Mexico City where i grew up. we'd watch cartoons, kids shows, school educational films and documentaries.
- from several trips to the US and Canada where i'd visit magical places like museums, epcot center and disneyland.

I've been lurking here for ages, so i think it's about time i weighed in with something. My BOC memories have taken on special meaning since i went on a big travelling experience last year. I've always been into them, since MHTRTC came out, but would never have considered myself a huge fan. But when i went away travelling i took my minidisc player and put MHTRTC and Geogaddi on one disc and ended up listening to it almost constantly for a year. I'd be on 12 hour overnight bus rides and i'd put it on repeat and just drift off to sleep. It's ridiculous how much i listened to that disc, almost totally ignoring the other ones i took with me, getting more and more amazed at the depth and complexity of those albums, discovering and noticing something new practically every time i stuck it on. It was an absolute lifesaver. I can't adequately explain how much i relied on that disc to get me through some really horrible long bus journeys, how i never tired of it, how sometimes it just totally entralled me even after the third or fourth consecutive listen, how much i could concentrate on it and escape into it.

And i have so many amazing memories of going through the most amazing landscapes and sights with BOC as a soundtrack. Perhaps the most memorable one: a long four or five hour bus ride through the most incredible Patagonian high altitude landscape of vast, wide grasslands with copses of strange trees dotted about it, driving along a high ridge above it meaning you could see it stretch away to the horizon. It was absolutely mindblowing. It sends a shiver down my back just thinkin about it. That was one of many amazing memories i associate with those albums, from S America to New Zealand to Asia.

I hope this doesn't sound like bragging, but this just explains, in my case, why i am so into them now. No other music before or since has enthralled me as much, and just seemed so right.

I just wish TCH had come out before i left...

Great story niknak, seems like you had quite an amazing journy. I wish I had the money to just pick up and leave this shithole town and just travel for months. Welcome to the forum!

The Campfire Headphase has some very strong memories associated with it for me. Along with Animal Collective's "Feels", it was really the album of the summer for me. It's hard to really pinpoint anything super-specific that it brings to mind other than all the times my friends and I built fires on the beach and just sat around and talked for hours. Best summer I've hever had, by far.

Music Has the Right to Children also holds a lot of memories from that summer as well, actually. Most specifically the time I was listening to it while walking to the beach on the brightest, hottest day of the summer. There were all these brightly-coloured stores and everything along the way. Yum, Aquarius.

In conclusion: I like beaches.

Another thought: Come to think of it, I don't even think I'd HEARD The Campfire Headphase during the summer. (it wasn't leaked until later, right?) Weird that I connect it to that.

BOC takes me back to the time where I first heard them, winter of 2003.

The summer of '03 had been, hands down, the greatest time of my life. I was making lots of new friends, playing the drums, hanging out in fields and parks, in the hills, at the beach in front of campfires, just having good old fashioned fun. Actually getting out of the house and doing things instead of being anti-social, as was often the case... not to mention the experiences with mind bending hallucinogens...

I started getting into electronic music more and more. Particularly the darker, creepier stuff. Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works series was often played that summer. As well as Autechre, Brian Eno, Tangerine Dream, and a couple choice .mods from the now dead trax scene.

I have always clung to the darker, more bizarre side of music. I think this is because some of my earliest memories are of the music my dad used to listen to when I was very young. I particularly remember the backwards guitar sounds from Jimi Hendrix's Are You Experienced. Also, one time, my dad was listening to Strawberry Fields Forever by The Beatles, and the tape player started eating the tape! It started slowing down, then speeding up, then getting insanely warbly! It was absolutely nightmarish to a 4 or 5 year old child such as myself at the time.

Anyway, getting back to my story. Once fall of '03 rolled around, things started to slow down a bit. We all started getting jobs and a few of us parted ways. By winter, I found myself at home a bit more. I crammed the social voids with more music. One night, I was looking around on CDNow for Aphex Twin, when I saw the "Customers who purchased this also bought..." section... where I saw the name Boards Of Canada. I clicked on it, and saw the Twoism EP. The first thing I ever heard by them was Iced Cooly. I remember it very well. I almost wet myself it was so perfect. It was the most garbled up, out of tune, destroyed, warbly, and unsettling thing I had ever heard... and I ate up every second of it! Seriously, this music was perfect. It was everything I ever wanted to hear in music. By the next day, I had downloaded all their official albums (and of course bought them a little later)

At first, and for a long time... well into 2004, BOC took me happily back to times where I was snowed in over at my friends place and I stayed in the guest bedroom with no windows. I would lay there in the dark and just let it all go while listening to BOC. Then, they became the soundtrack to that awesome summer. Then, they started taking me to places and times that I cannot place... that I'm not sure even exist. There is a very heavy nostalgic feeling to it. I can feel the late 70's early 80's vibe... even though I was most certainly not there at the time. I love it so much.

One of my most recent, awesome BOC experiences was during an 8 hour long car ride just last summer from Spokane Washington down to Salem Oregon. I was in the backseat just riding along with BOC in the headphones (as well as Christ) looking at all the killer scenery. It was absolutely lovely. This was right around the time when The Campfire Headphase track names had been announced. In fact, it was just days before they put Oscar See Through Red Eye on Bleep... by the way. I love the that album's name. When I first saw "The Campfire Headphase" I thought to myself, "How fitting." It reminded me even more of that killer summer in '03.

Sorry to drag on so long... I just wanted to get all that out in the open!

B.o.C brings me back to last fall when I first started getting into them, me and my my pal would just go outside smoke a cigarette in the cold then come back in an jam some davie addison. I liv eon a golfcourse and behind it is a kind of a rural country looking shed just past a creek so thats pretty beautifull to look at when im listeneing to them. It also brings me back to getting high and walking through a trail listening to kid for today which was a beautifull expereience. I plan to do the same thing next year.
