Yet another Music Making Discussion: CPU Loads

I feel like slamming my head against a wall. Does anyone get periodical waves of CPU shittiness that last like a week then mysteriously disappear. Any suggestions/complaints?

i don't have that problem but i know in fruity loops you can adjust the buffer size to prevent that from happening, i would be willing to bet there's a way to do that on any other major DAW or whatevah

but yes, it sucks verrily... i have a fairly decent CPU and still sometimes a song will just unexpectedly gobble resources

never happens to me. not sure what you're running but ableton also has features to ease strain on the comp. make sure audio clips are not on hifi, and maybe use the 'RAM' feature so that it loads the clip ahead of time to save cpu usage. Freeze tracks that aren't being edited as well. stuff like that will help some. Also, some effects like reverbs have a quality (eco, mid, and high). I like to work with everything on the low end, but before the final export i put it all the way to the max for the best sound.

Nothing to to but mute certain instruments.
I export my track into multiple layers and then re-import them. It gets rid of VST's which are the main source of CPU troubles. Its also better for mixing I noticed.

I used to make with FL 7 on a pentium 2. It worked...for about 6 patterns. Then I'd have to export it, reimport, add 6 patterns, repeat, load in audacity and fuck with speed, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat.
Since half a year I have a Dual Core with FL 8 and I still have the habbit of doing this.
