BOC versus Autechre

I just read an old post from"Deadfly", there's no comparison between AE and BOC, he or she is right there!Autechre made 4 GREAT albums, each different, listen 2:Incunabula, Amber, Tri Repetea, Chiastic Slide. After that they became more and more abstract and not so surprising anymore, but they are still one of the best in electronic music!!!!

All of their releases are amazing... You just need to spend time with each one and hear the incredible progression from the beginning of their catalogue to the end.

I started with Incunabula & Amber back in '94 and they have always managed to take things further on every release. </fanboi>

I never really got autechre..

That's a shame, they made some incredible albums in the electronic music scene, check them out, a surprise is waiting for you! :D

Man, I don't know what's wrong with me. These Autechre tracks some of you guys are comparing to Boards - just don't hear it. They all sound like the same insect-like, headache inducing tracks.

Autechre is best discovered in chronological order imo. If you dive in with Confield or Draft you might find it hard work. My favorite album is LP5, my least fav being Draft 7 which I find just painfull.

And the EP's are superb.

I can see what you're saying that it's a little boc-ish, but not enough to the point where I think a boc fan would like it if they can't stand autechre. I love autechre though, even their less accessible works (I started with Confield and it's maybe my favorite still).

I don't think anyone else sounds like autechre really, you can't wipe their finger prints off their sound. I can see them as being on the same family tree as boc though, and to be fair I don't know if I ever would have given autechre a chance if I didn't get into boc.

I came from a more guitar oriented background and it was hard for me to break open my head on electronic sound for awhile. I feel like shoegaze paved the way for BoC for me, and then BoC lead to aphex twin and autechre et al.

They have some surprisingly emotional tracks. Draun Quarter is big for me. I was moving, driving cross country when it made me tear up so I always think of that when I hear it. Sometimes they get this sweeping arc of a track just right.. The rhythm clicks along like fast moving fine details in the scenery, pulling me along new permutations, while the lushness blooms and scrolls by like larger geographical features. The lens gets wider and it all coheres. They, and many others, showed me that I could have mind expanding experiences just with music alone. A while ago Thom Yorke said "that song changed my brain," (in reference to Drane from Peel Sessions, I think) and I felt like I knew exactly what he meant. When I started listening to ae, it first clicked for me when I felt like I could "feel" all the layers moving together like this, as in a 2d side-scroller, each layer moving at different speeds or even directions relative to each other. Certain BoC songs had me envisioning the same thing but the layers rock back and forth much more, in greater or maybe just more compelling detail. Like stacks of spinning prayer wheels, with Eddie Murphy scratching one in The Golden Child The drums in Julie and Candy and Sunshine Recorder are good examples. I feel like I owe them all something for kicking open a part of my brain.

what she said. It's a musical progression, the more different kinds of music you listen to the more doors you open for yourself to new sounds.

Autechre is difficult listening. I've given most of their catalogue some serious listening and can say that I'm impressed and amazed at what they can pull out of their gear. They still however remain an intellectual exercise and experience for me. They tickle the synaptic functions in my brain but my heart remains cold and unmoved towards anything they've done.

They do not move me. It's as simple as that. So I find myself not going back.

I'm not sure there's a quick way to get into Autechre, their whole discography is like a trajectory, a slow descent from relatively standard early 90s Warp ambient (Amber) through mechanisation (Tri Repetae), into chaos (LP7-Confeld), out of which patterns start to emerge (Quaristice on) like how if you stare enough at a field of static you start to see faces. I can't imagine coming to any of their later stuff out of order, or out of the context of the music of the time.

Fredd-E posted a good list of tracks earlier, and everything up to Tri Repetae is kinda approachable on its own. After that I dunno, the Quaristice Quadrange EP is a good listen, because it's got the chaos, but they're jamming around with the same material so it's easier to see the thought processes and the patterns in it.

Perversely, it's a bit easier to approach when someone's done the unpicking for you. But it's hard music to listen to, for sure. You have to be in the mood for it, and if it comes up on your random playlist you have to constantly explain it to people.
