i'm sure there's a thread for this already, but it's 11:45 pm, wednesday night.. night before my ap chem exam.. so i don't have the attention span to look through this forum more than 7 pages.
anyway.
i keep hearing "autchre, autechre, autechre" (i swear i misspelled it every time i typed it just now).
where do I start?
is it like plaid, and it's another one of those artists i should just start with the first album and grow with the artist over time?
or just start anywhere?

I'd say start with 'Incunabula,' and work forward.... it seems to get crazier each album. ironically, incunabula is the only real "album" I like of theirs, outside of tri reptae, which is equally accessible. to each their own

I agree fully. It's pretty cool to see how they progressed over time.

all of it is really good. i think that starting at the beginning and following them on is the best way to take on the new sounds from album to album. i think it also helps to appreciate what you're hearing when you know where they were the album prior.
i started with tri repetae, then got lp5. those albums seem to be good entry points. the first two albums might be a bit off-putting just because they could sound pretty dated. though i still think they sound cool. the stuff from confield onwards might be a little too weird to jump straight into. it can be hard to get into at first but theres a lot to discover in there. autechre are amazing.

Definitely start with the early stuff. My first was Amber. Bought it because I loved the cover.
Each album after Tri Repetae I didn't like at first but then it slowly starts to make sense. Would probably say that LP5 is my favourite these days. Maybe in 10 years time I'll be up to Untilted.

people will say it's not the best place to start... but imo if you find the later stuff offputting a little synchronisation with your other senses will go a long way to exposing their true awesome

I think diving into the harder less accessible stuff first worked for me.

Though not strictly Autechre, I would start with the Gescom EPs
