Well, Lateralus was the first original album I ever had, it was a gift from my brother so I have fond memories of it although it's been years since I don't listen to it 
. The first CD I bought with my own money though was Mer de Noms by APC, it was a great album!

Most of the time if you ask them why, they end up saying something about the fans. The fan base for Tool is gigantic thanks to MTV, how can people make broad generalizations like that?
