Where to start with Ae

Where should I start with Autechre? I know I really, really like them, but I have no idea which album I should buy first. I was thinking Tri Repetae, but I'm not sure as I don't really know their discography. Insight, brilliant Twoismers?

I'd say if you can handle it, got for Untilted or Confield. It took me some time to fully appreciate these wonderful albums though.

Chronologically, I don't recommend anything they have made in the 2000s though but that's just me.

Although I usually recommend that a person start chronologically with any discography, I think that in some cases it's a little too much to dig through mounds of early albums. I recommend that you listen to LP5 and then branch out simultaneously in both directions.

If you want the most accessible releases try Amber and Tri Repetae first. I would say avoid Quaristice - can't for the life of me understand the appeal of that record but Oversteps isn't the worst place to start despite being their latest record. Enjoy!

I'd normally shy away from saying "chronologically" as it's a bit of a cop out. But with Ae it's actually one of the joys, because you get to see their progression from a 1994 run-of-the-mill Warp act on their first album, through experimenting with more ambient textures and interlocking non-4/4 patterns on Amber, the experiment of "how much 4/4 repetition can we throw away" on Anti-EP, and then through Tri-Repetae into their full-on, liberated glitchy madness from EP7 onwards. It's like an encyclopedia entry on the roots and development of the IDM and glitch genres.

As others have said, I think it all got a bit much with Quaristice/Confield... some people really disagree with that and think they're the best work they've ever done. For me I think it all went a bit far at that point, and they reined it in on Oversteps. Oversteps is, in my opinion, the proof in the theory that you can't turn everything up to 11 all the time, you need to lay off from time to time to make it interesting. It's a return to form.

Not Incanabula. To me it sounds very very dated and doesn't give many clues as to the direction they woud end up going in. While I prefer Tri Repetae I'd have to say Amber as it's more rounded, it's got everything.

I loved Tri repetae at first listenings, the same story of Incunabula and Amber.
I have a licensed copies of Inc and Amber will arrive soon but still asking myself...is it worth it to buy "++" american edition or buy Garbage, Anti (will arrive soon too), Anvil Vapre and Tri repetae separately? And i thought that separate way is better

And make sure you get Tri Repetae++, it includes a second disc, which as Patryk Ludamage was saying includes both EP's Anvil Vapre and Garbage.

Yeah, I agree. I was introduced to Ae via Tri Repetae++ and although it was pretty weird hearing their older stuff and their newer stuff when my first impression of them was at that mid-point, that was a good place for me to start.

Lp5 would be my choice. Its sort of mixes their early and later sounds so you may get an indication of what side of Autechre you want to hear more of and go from there

Too hard to get into LP5 even now. The ep7 was a good start for myself and it's still easy to lsten than more complicated LP5 sounding
