Precisely the reason why I don't get along with most pop. There do seem to be exceptions to your rule though, the Beatles at least partially used concepts they believed in, the beach boys and a couple others who I can't remember off the top of my head.

Anyway, I listen to pop that comes highly recommended as unlike the other trash, I don't put a blanket ban on it. But I can't fathom why people let themselves be lied to everyday, and not just by pop but by most TV and film too, even intelligent people do so.

Actually I can fathom why, but it is best not to get into that lol.

Pop music (I use that term in the loosest possible sense her) is inherently "fake" in it's very nature. That's part of what is good about it. It's always been that way. What Kanye is doing isn't really much different to what Johnny Rotten was doing in 1977.

Every so often someone will come along that claims to be "real". They are either eaten up by the machine and end up dead (Kurt Cobain, Elliott Smith) or they become just as "fake" as everyone else (Foo Fighters, Kings Of Leon).

At least Kanye has the balls to embrace this "fake"-ness. To acknowledge it for what it is, to play on it. Sure, he comes across as an arrogant prick. But there are plenty of others who are just as bad, if not worse, who get away with it simply because they hold a guitar and wear jeans with a rip in the knee.

It's okay, guys, he's ironically fake!

I'm not sure if he's even that. He could just be mentally ill. Watching his performance at Glastonbury was a bit like watching the world's most successful outsider musician.

Aerial, that's the main reason why I've started not really trying to go with the idea of "guilty pleasures"

a pop song can be really well written, and if it's well written, what's the problem with liking it. Like the new Janet Jackson song is a fantastic pop song. I like it, and I'd never consider it a guilty pleasure because I feel it's a well written song with great dynamics and an infectiously seductive mood.

I pick and choose my taste, but instead of limiting myself to the lollies which no one else likes, I take something from everywhere

Pretty much my approach.

That's why I have such a hard time when people ask what genres of music I listen to. If I mention a genre, people get the wrong idea because I usually am very picky and generally don't get along with a vast majority of music which might come under the same label.

You know, there are no guilty pleasures.

Because I don't feel guilty listening to said guilty pleasures.

Sue me.

Fuck me. I must've been properly ill that week.

Glad this thread is still going, and I am equally glad that most of the links I posted previously have now vanished from YouTube :)

I enjoyed Logic's Confessions of A Dangerous Mind, I rated it 3 stars on rateyourmusic but I always come back to a lot of the tracks that I'm feeling about a 7/10 now. Logic may say some stupid verses in here, but honestly I could care less about the verses, plus some of them are so hilarious to me that it becomes entertaining... and I LOVE his production... way better than 90% of the trap rap stuff I've listened to in the past year.
That Squidward crossover guy and Plaid fanatic. ALSO FUCK IM SORRY HAVENT BEEN INACTIVE ON HERE I'VE BEEN USING WATMM MORE :(

I love Kanye's older music (everything through Yeezus) and some of his newer stuff, but I'm not guilty about it at all. I like what I like.
