I get why people think they rip off BoC. But I think if you look deeper, past the grainy synths, it is obvious that they are two totally different styles of music. Now Tobacco, IMO is closer to BoC. Since the songs are kind of like hip hop beats, they progress more like a BoC song... kind of...

I think there's a huge difference in ripping off BoC and being inspired by them. Tobacco is obviously really inspired by them, and his music reflects that. I don't think it sounds similar for the most part.

it really is. i actually want to talk about the table in this thread, to be honest. is your dad a master craftsman or what's the dealio?

hah thanks to both of you even if you are being sarcastic, turquoise. He really is. It's always been a bit of a hobby for him. He makes everything from practical stuff to amazing bowls, vases, weird little jewelry cases with hidden drawers, etc I've told him he should make things to sell but he has no interest in that. Not only is he pretty creative but he works fast. He makes miniature rocking chairs for newborns in the family and the wood always has some significance. The table he made for me was from leftover wood from the house he grew up in. It took him a couple weeks to finish the table for me but he tore half of his thumb off in his table saw at the beginning of the project. When it happened I had been borrowing his truck and I left my car with him but unfortunately forgot to give him the keys. He called me and asked me if there was a spare somewhere and said there wasnt and apologized.. He just said "oh that's fine, I can do what I need to do on the motorcycle". We hung up and it wasn't until that night I found out he was missing all the meat on the underside of his thumb and needed to drive himself to the hospital.

I don't hear boc anywhere in bmsr or tobacco's stuff.. The first time I heard vietcaterpillar it reminded me of ROYGBIV but that's only because my brains wired to find boc in everything.

i'm not being sarcastic, that table is sweet. i like wood crafted furniture, most of my stuff in my bedroom was made by this particular group of Amish who really rock at it, it's lasted in great condition since i was a baby.

There are two versions of Vietcaterpillar, the one on Start a People has a little interlude at 1:20 that is pretty damn BoCish. The original version, on Falling Through a Field, doesnt have that part though, its something different, and not as cool.

Also, has anyone heard the new 12" picture disc "dont you want to be in a cult/feel the drip" ?
It's really good, but pretty limited, and the record label is subscription-based only, meaning you have to pay at least 80 dollars, plus shipping for like 6 LPs or something like that. However, www.insound.com had some for sale, they might still. Mine arrived last week, it's really beautiful. It's the only full clor picture disc I own. The songs are realllllly good too. No lyrics, but there are plenty of vocoder "na na na" parts. I'd strongly recommend anyone with a fetish for vinyl (like myself) to order one while they still exist! Here:
