Agree, think this is probably their best work actually. I always thought Triumphant was their best track, remember listening to The Understanding for the first time and thinking wow this albums going to be amazing, only for Triumphant to be followed by 49 Percent, bit too cheesy/Dane Bowers-esque for me. But yeah this album is full of class.

Ehhhhhhh well... I like this a bit more than Junior, yes. Although there were some tracks off Junior that I like.

So far I'm not super super impressed, though. I've heard The Fear (liked it), The Drug (could totally take or leave it) and The Alcoholic (bored by it). So far they all kinda sound like variations on the same song to my ears.

I must say though that in my personal opinion this stuff doesn't reach anywhere close to Melody A.M. - most of that having to do with the fact that it sounds nothing like it in approach. All these songs seem to start off with these clean, precise beats - I don't like them, they just don't seem to have any character (the beats I mean). The songs have some very pretty moments, but overall they aren't very "daring" if you know what I mean - and I know someone's going to read that and think "But that's what Junior was all about, Senior is worldly and more subdued" but that's not what I mean, I mean musically daring, like, something interesting and stimulating to the ears, this is all like...easy listening to me. It could fade into the background and I wouldn't notice. Stars of the Lid has more "moving" moments in its songs than this new stuff does. That, in a nutshell, is why I'm just lukewarm on this record so far. Maybe I'll hear something that changes my mind.

Just checked that one out. Very pretty, I like it. However, it's still exemplary of the thing that disappoints me about this record - though I think it's a "good" record, it just doesn't wow or move me. "Very pretty, I like it." seems to be the best I can say about it - which isn't bad, but definitely isn't what I'm saying about the new VHS Head record. That's not to say I mean to compare the two, merely my reaction to two examples of new music. And it could be that Royksopp's direction just isn't my kind of music, but Melody A.M. was one of my favorite electronic pieces when I was younger and remains one of my favorites today, so they have a history with me.

It sure is. This video seems perfect for it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkO_3FdnNt4

It almost has a Geogaddi feel to it.

Okay, that exemplifies my feeling toward this track PERFECTLY

That video was fucking amazing. And you know what? It's 100x better than the track it's made to accompany. The track is nothing more than a simple loop, with like, what, two elements? One major element? And a few "creepy" samples placed in. Yeah, they're placed kinda nice. Okay, they're neat. NO they don't approach Geogaddi-level coolness. NO they don't advance or enhance the track. You know what this reminds me of? This reminds me of listening to some shitty "Halloween FX Tape" cassette that you get for $2 in the grocery store. This offers you next-to-nothing. That's my problem with this new Royksopp. I LOVED early Royksopp. I think I honestly might have even liked Junior more than this. This is so disappointing :(

Tue Sep 14, 2010 5:46 pm

Yeah, can see what you mean. It's all a bit creepy by numbers. Play a mournful loop and overlay some cheap horror sound effects record samples.

Not really Geogaddi is it? ;)

Tue Sep 14, 2010 7:38 pm

Sorry guys I'll stop ranting in here. Royksopp make good music and I'm not trying to just dump on them. This just isn't up my ally like Melody A.M. was and that's that.

gets a thumbs down from me

I certainly wasn't trying to compare this track, or this album for that matter, to Geogaddi. The former is just a throw away hidden bonus track on a simply mediocre to good album by Röyksopp. The latter being BoC's Magnus Opus, IMHO. I know the song is basically a simple loop with dime store, horror show, sound effects thrown on top, but I also know Röyksopp are aware of the absurdity of it all and are simply "hiding" this track at the end of the album with their tongues firmly placed against their cheeks. I guess I was just a little surprised to hear something this dark in atmosphere coming from the same band that released "Happy Up Here" a year ago.

As far as the rest of the album goes, I think it's good...not their best, and nowhere near as good as 'Melody AM.', but at least its not 'Junior'...shivers...

This album is fucking gorgeous. Listened to it for the first time today while cleaning the house. Tracks 4-7 are just outstanding.

I'm really liking this 'senior side' of Röyksopp's sound. I hope they explore it further in their future albums. Great autumn music! The cover art reminds me of Aphex Twin :D

Great album "holds the vinyl"..Junior was not my cigar at all ( about 3 tracks I liked ). Gotta love the instrumental albums and tracks over the vocal disco stuff. I would give the Senior 8+. 3/4 of the tracks I liked, the other..well I dont hate but not my favorite either.

I've been a Röyksopp fan from the A.M days and they are going in back to better direction. Please ..listen to the newest track of the month..its very good too : http://royksopp.com/track-of-the-month-september . Should have been finished and in Senior imo! And check their earlier work too..Aedena Cycle, Alania and Drum Island-era stuff are good listen too
