Made myself a compilation of 60's hits to listen to on the drive back to uni, and this track made me nearly weep. Dunno why, just had a strange effect on me.

When I wake up and can't remember what happened the night before this record is usually spinning its final groove, probably for many hours! The album cover is on the floor.

I remember this came out after the Suddenly Stars single after Mary Hansen was killed and its always been an emotional experience to listen to it. I have memories of driving in the Pacific with the windows down and Cosmic Country Noir broke into its second gorgeous segment right when I turned a corner and in the distance were blue crashing waves. I love this record, the last truly great Stereolab album. Super tight and brimming with energy, but still remained some what focused.
They kinda lost that focus not long afterwards.

A Lebanese singer I discovered through Jim Jarmusch's film Only Lovers Left Alive. A hauntingly beautiful mix of traditional Middle Eastern music, folk, and pop elements.
Really recommended.

After somebody was keep pushing me to Ben Howard, who I thought was just some lame Singer Songwriter, I've been giving his latest album ''I forget where we were'' a few spins, and I'm starting to really like it. Liking the darkness and the depressiveness in his songs.

Actually, I'm just getting into them and last night was the first time I've listened to them.

Still getting around to II and whatever else. I understand that Multi-Love hasn't been officially released yet, though I do have ways of getting it before then, I'd prefer to wait I think. Might do the right thing and buy it.

I do really like them, particularly Nielson's singing. Reminds me of Robert Plant in parts (see FFunny FFrends). And they've got a knack for great guitar licks too. Plus, the lyrics are solid. I loathe bad lyrics, hence why I mainly keep to instrumental music.

Weirdly enough I just came here to post that I was listening to UMO. Love both albums. The two new songs I've heard sound like Prince, which is fine by me.

There are actually parts of both albums that remind me of MHTRTC. That combination of psychadelia, nostalgia, and old drum breaks.

UMO are great, first two albums are the exact groovy lo-fi guitar shit I can dig.

yeah the new one has leaked, but don't get me wrong. I like it and will eventually buy it, I'm just for trying before buying.
I've got S/T on LP and II on CD, so I've supported this band so far.

My personal fave is II, Multi Love may grow on me, the longer tracks especially have yet to sink in.

Listened to II now.

I prefer the first album at the moment, though that is likely because the first one makes more of an initial first impression. It is a bit more forthright than the second, instantly gratifying.

I have a lot of issues with S/T that II seems to clear up, particularly the repetitive song structures.

I mean I love the melodies on the thing, don't get me wrong, but Thought Ballune, Bicycle and Ffunny Ffriends all trudge on for over 4 minutes mostly switching between the verses and a chorus, and then an overly long fade out. Like the fadeout on Bicycle is almost a minute in length.
The second half of a lot of the tracks feel like they're light on ideas and just repeat the first half, with maybe a solo thrown in.
And to boot, the record's only 30 minutes. With a 30 minute record, you shouldn't be trying to pad your songs out.

I feel that the fade out problem is mostly fixed in II (still is present on a lot of tracks but doesn't feel like its drawn out, except for From the Sun)
At least in terms with the longer tracks, because Monki is 7 minutes long but feels like it deserves its length, as well as the other 5 minute+ cuts.

Had I not been sleep deprived at the time, I probably would have picked up on the repetitiveness. Or rather would have been bothered by it.

As it stands though it sort of struck me as having the same philosophy around song structure as Loveless. 'Keep It Simple, Stupid.'

Yeah but Loveless has a hypnotic flavour with the reverb and effects,
A track like Soon can slip into your subconscious, more than anything on S/T, for me anyway.

UMO, at least with their first record, has very little in the way of effects. Everything's in your face, the beats and the bass especially.
It feels less like a simple structure intended to be hypnotic, and more like a copy/paste/copy/paste scenario.

I can live with the repetitiveness, because the melodies are just great.

The first record seems to be mainly sampled loops for the drums. I'm pretty sure one of the tracks samples Sgt Pepper's.
