This is pretty old and you may have seen it before, but in case you haven't, someone posted this on WATMM recently and I thought it should be shared here. It's a great explanation of what's been going on with vaporwave over the past few years, and I believe Chris Ott is very accurate in his criticisms (which is something I never thought I'd say about a Pitchfork writer).

I believe that a genre loses its creativity as soon as it's classified as a genre, and vaporwave was classified pretty much instantly; that's the simplest way to put my opinion into words.
