Although as a "large picture" kinda guy I'm relieved the Earth still seems habitable for a few decades or so, I'm absolutely mortified by this whole affair. As someone who once considered Jason a colleague and would banter with him on Facebook and what not, and who truly enjoyed his "work" ( I have much the same road ahead in compensating the proper artists--this is literally insane), I'm not only deeply saddened for everyone involved--including Jason--but voraciously angry and utterly astonished at the level of his deception. I too have often examined his "sales" on eyesix records and concluded that things seemed to be selling well--the revelation of how deviously he's been manipulating you wonderful people, you truly dedicated and selfless artists, has added fuel to my incendiary mental state. Absolutely criminal. I'm so very sorry for any artist who has had to deal with the sheer madness over at eyesix "records."

I've worked closely with my dear friends at Sparkwood Records (I release music there as well) for two years now, and I can happily report that any quotation regarding them stemming from Jason is slanderous--that I've not only received fiscal compensation from them for my work, but have always understood quite clearly that as an artist I'm entitled to a share in the profits stemming from it, and have always been issued details surrounding all pertinent sales figures. So when I read things discussing what Jason has described vis-a-vis a "slow Norwegian label" I get extremely angry, because it is a lie (unsurprisingly) and paints my friends in belligerently untrue colors. It makes me enormously happy that the lads are taking this issue quite seriously and will take action in sorting out this bleeding mess.

And of course I'm sad that this blatant plagiarism has touched this fantastic community. I've been quite shaken by the things I've learned in this thread. Thankfully, it seems that the gears of (unfortunately limited) justice are turning--actual owners of the music are identifying their work, and it seems that some measure of monetary compensation will be forthcoming, not to mention the unsurprising desire in each of us to support the victims of this malicious scam. I plan to do my part in that, especially concerning Cities of Earth, who appears to be a rather sizable source of the "ACYL" material. Absolutely appalling.

Excellent post el Cerebro. It reminds me of a nugget of info Jason once mentioned to me in Facebook. He claimed he let Sparkwood keep all the money from his releases but that they once sent him some money when he was going through a tight time. I didn't think much of this at the time, but looking back it's odd. It all leaves a horrible taste in the mouth.

I sent some songs I had been working on for the release I was going to do for him and a remix or two of BoC songs I did for fun. I'll have to look through his releases and see. Is there anywhere I can hear the stuff he released at this point, or no? I don't really care about money, but if someone was like "hey, that's a cool song", then I want my due credit. :|

He released an album that consisted of a handful of Boards of Canada songs that were either remix versions or cover versions. There is a chance he might have included your BoC remixes. I still have the tracks somewhere on my computer, do you want me to send them to you, so you can check if he used your remixes without permission?

I don't think the guy ever asked me to release music with him,

I don't know if I should be offended or not

This is all very disturbing, and I am very glad that I bailed when I did. A few years ago I did a collab track with Jason called drifting. It seems like the stuff he sent me was from reason, but I guess I'll never know for sure. At least the stems were seperated. Anyways, if it was my choice, I would have it removed from one on twoism vol. 6.

The boards of Canada Remixes he released was again another album that I received a bandcamp notification about, by the time I'd checked it out it had disappeared.

I remember this period. Jason was chatting with me through messenger on FaceBook around that time. He was real excited about the collaboration at first, talking about some future album or project you were doing together. Not to long after that he was saying that you and him were not getting along, blaming you for not cooperating. I said things like, "oh, man that sucks". I had no idea who you were and of course it wasn't my business to even know what was going on. So I skated the subject. That is the point where I noticed some drama, I could tell it was stemming from him. This is all too bad.

Noticed another few releases from eyesix under the artist title Feel Good Lost, is that a legit artist or maybe another of Jason's projects.
Jason is you are by any chance reading this, come clean and publish a list of the artists you stole from.

huh, what a cunt he turned out to be. I knew something was up with the sheer volume of music he was putting out.

it's just so frustrating that the artists he plagarized will probably never get 100% of the money/noteriety they deserve. It's just such a sad situation

I have some serious questions as to the motives involved I'd really like answered--as I can safely say for all of us, really, particularly Cities of Earth, who was nothing short of pillaged. I'd be a literal deluge of anger had this happened to me. I simply cannot begin to fathom how and why this occurred; I fancy myself a clever bloke but this is just completely beyond me.

When I released my first stuff on Sparkwood I was happy to call eyesix a label mate. I was obsessed with the track "Monarch Shortwave" for months. I really wonder who made it.

But beyond that, I'm sure no insight is forthcoming, nor does any defense even matter, really--this evil scam has been overthrown.*

Hey @2020k I noticed "an interview with Eyesix" on your website...didn't know if you were aware that it was still active:

This line really gets me:

"Yeah, I met a lot of good people through Twoism. A lot of friends that have helped me out, and guys I have worked with. I love the community there, cool meeting place for people with similar taste in stuff as myself, so I’m a frequent visitor." - Jason Dowd

Reading this thread for the first time and feeling sick. It's tough enough for artists to make a pittance for their hard work these days, and people like this just shit all over our trust. As if this forum needs anymore paranoia. Most of us are making music in our bedrooms and taking chances by putting it out on the web, but without the web we wouldn't have any other outlet. Someone finds their first label and gets really excited only to be lied to and uncompensated, or stolen from and impersonated. I don't even want to scour the Waybackmachine to see if he took any of the tracks I posted here, I just want him to feel like the piece of fucking trash he is because you know he is reading this.

It's really a shame what Jason Dowd did ...I'd like to believe he had some talent and that he was capable of producing his own works and that is what is really puzzling about this whole situation.

He obviously had a good eye for art and although it is questionable on his talent as a song writer he must have had something going on to get noticed in the first place even the tracks/stems he did lift one can say were arguably good remixes.

What we do know is that Mr Dowd did indeed suffer from depression and admittedly abused drugs as a way to cope, he seemed to live a sedentary life and had expressed having social anxiety.

So why did he do it? I believe his motivations were to be something he was not ...that is in real life (not very well received), I think he found a little bit of solace in the notion that atleast in this world (the online world) he was liked and did indeed have a following.

I think Jason found his love for attention was outgrowing his creative spark and lifted tracks to keep up with his ever growing demand to have attention and in his mind he convinced himself it was just a white lie....that by altering the tracks he put his moniker on them.

Another factor is he as someone with a social anxiety issue he may have had a difficult time finding steady work and relied on his music to not only to supplement his income but as a vehicle to support his drug habits.

If i were going to make a bet i think Jason was addicted to opiates. I know first hand the kind of desperate things those who have such a habit will do too get there fix.

Mr Dowd paints a picture of a man who was sinking, who lost the ability to be honest with himself and too others, If you know people who are addicted to drugs this has a familiar ring.

I hope Jason gets the help he needs to start a new life, I hope he understands how lost he is and most importantly i hope this is a HUGE wakeup call.

Social anxiety doesn't apply in this situation. I have it too, but this is the internet...

Nothing less than insanity could make a person think that stealing/impersonating is ok, or that they wouldn't be caught. No sympathy here. I don't care about his anxiety/lack of self worth/addictions - we all suffer in various ways. Have fucking morals, that's all there is to it.

"No sympathy here"

I understand, I had a friend (dead now) that was addicted to hard drugs and let me tell you he turned into an absolute untrustworthy scumbag.

He like Jason was very cunning, however, once you pulled back the layers of bullshit there was very little to like( a shell of a man)

Jason knew full well of what he was doing and didn't seem to care and that my friend is truly sad .....when you loose all focus and live life to an abandon such as he does .....i guess it makes me sad because i know whats in store for him and it's nothing nice.

Surely everybody is pissed i get that and if retribution is what your after know than Jason will pay more than the hundreds or thousands of dollars he stole.....he stole himself and that has got to be the worst thing to take.

Whether this can be attributed to an addiction or depression or social anxiety or money trouble or simply poor character, he has committed artistic suicide.

If he had robbed a bank he'd still have his art and his integrity, and possibly even the respect of the community.

Now he has nothing. We all make our own beds.

Very good point, I was eluding to that when i said he stole himself.
