Part 17 was almost the 'proper' ending we maybe hoped for, wasn't it? Only for it to be stolen away again in 18. For me the key moments/elements of ep. 18 were -

When Cooper comes out of the black lodge into the sycamore grove, Diane seems to be meeting him for the first time since he went in in the original series - so as Cooper says at the end - what year is it?

Cooper is clearly a different character from the one we all know and love. In fact, as mentioned a few times on t'internet, he's literally a different person, possibly in an alternate reality.

The actual, real life owner of the Palmer house answers the door to 'Cooper' and 'Laura' - a breaking of the 4th wall? Again, what year is it?

For me, the message is that Cooper goes back and 'saves' Laura (Episode 17), but the real pay off of returning her 'home' can't happen and he ends up in a different future/reality - our reality, possibly, forever?
No doubt some sort of comment on the traditional 'hero' role/a reaction to the series' legacy and myth/the nature of life and time etc etc. Someone smarter than me can figure that out, maybe.

I fucking loved it. It took me somewhere else entirely, changed my reality, like all the great art I've experienced. Still probably the greatest TV series ever made, all in all.

Two of my favorite moments came up last. One was interesting because it reminds me of how consistent David Lynch's art seems to be, in that amazing scene with Cooper and Philip Jeffries' thrumming and hissing black metal object form spewing thought smoke; the psychedelic language spoken and feeling recalled so much of the Navigator in his Dune film. The other was "Richard" having just deep fried some guns and blankly waving his around reassuring all that he was with the FBI which was hilarious.

Or rather, it was a good Lynch mic-drop. I didn't 'get it' the way I was really getting the first two thirds of these episodes but I've played devil's advocate on this forum more than enough times so I'll just leave it with "I really enjoyed it, could have been better, was still good and still better than 98% of trash released these days".

I'm tempted to make an analogy such as "ever see It Follows?" regarding the end but it seems I'm the only person on Earth who feels the way I do about that film.

You've piqued my interest regarding the ending - I'd just seen it as deliberately ambiguous, but I'm interested to hear the similarity you see to Twin Peaks?

That's impressive!

I just finished watching The Return. I'm glad I re-watched Fire Walk With Me before I dove in as I hadn't seen it in years and it's referenced in flashbacks constantly.

Anyway, I liked it a lot, but I agree with those who felt that there were episodes that had scenes that dragged on for no good reason. It did feel like padding/filling time occasionally, but it's a minor complaint. My biggest complaint was

no Harry Truman. Nothing against Robert Forster, he's great, but Harry was such a huge part of the original series that his absence (and the constant reminders that he wasn't around) reduced my level of enjoyment.

On the plus side, I also agree with those who viewed The Return as a summation of all of Lynch's work. There's a lot of Eraserhead in this, in particular. I regret not experiencing it with surround sound as it's obvious Lynch went all out with the creepy as fuck sounds.

Who else watched this and thought that a BoC appearance at the Bang Bang Bar would've been totally apropos and beyond mindblowing?
