Atheism is "absence of belief in any deities" according to Wikipedia.

In my experience, more often than not, atheists actively deny the existence of God, rather than merely lacking a belief one way or the other.

I think many people who describe themselves as athiests really mean that they are agnostic.. or uncertain about their position in religious matters. I've never known any atheists who claimed to have found definitive evidence of God's non-existence...

Usually this position is accompanied by a train of logic (or sometimes just emotion) about how bad things are in the world, and that obviously they can't be the work of the God Christians hold to be both infinitely powerful and infinitely good.

Personally, I'm a theist... and while I don't have all the particulars nailed down.. the universe in my mind still definitely exhibits intelligent contrivance. Whether that's by a good God, or an evil God, or a mad scientist, I'm not sure... but the idea that this universe came out of nothing definitely has to be the greatest wishful thinking of our time.

That's my two cents. No offense intended to anyone. Does that clear it up at all Derail? :D

My family raised me as Unitarian, but I never went to church or even practiced the religion. For a while I thought I was an Atheist, but now I think I'm more Agnostic. It makes more sense to my beliefs and how I live my life.

XD I think he's alright. As long as he doesn’t start a holocaust or something I'm fine with him :D

The roman catholic church is also responsable for the holocaust :!: They never condemned openly the nazi's killing all those jews during WO II. :x

What's with the disrespect?

I think it's funny how in our culture you ABSOLUTELY CANNOT FOR ANY REASON provoke blacks, jews, or gays, but you can provoke Christian people till the end of time with no consequences whatsoever.

Imagine if I started a thread about the merits of homosexuality. I'd get slashed by a bunch of angry people whose PC sensibilities had been violated.

But belittle catholics or believers in general all you want... that's fair game.

Let's show some mutual tolerance, all right?

First of all homosexuality is not a choice, religion however is :!: According to the roman catholic church it's still a sin, so don't talk to me about tolerance. They still forbid the use of condoms that alone makes them guilty of murder :!: Religion is oppression, it always was and still is :!:

Homosexuality is beyond the power of human agency

DEBATABLE.

Catholic's stance on homosexuality=intolerance

DEBATABLE

Forbidding condoms=murder

DEBATABLE

Religion=Oppression

DEBATABLE

All I ask for is tolerance. Your position is no more rock solid logically or otherwise than anyone else's.

This discussion is over.

I will state it VERY simply.

I am extremely spiritual but not at ALL religious. I think most religions can steer people in the wrong direction, I respect the good that can come of them, but in my experience that is quite rare. I'd love to be proven wrong but it hasn't happened yet.

I believe in science, I don't believe in a God, of course I have no proof to the contrary, but I am FAR from having proof that there is one.

Personal experience has moulded who I am spiritually and for me, organized religion has no place there, but that's just me! I'm happy with who I am and how I go about my spirituality.

And yeah, Buddhism is more a philosophy, one that I very much agree with.

if you need a religion to keep your 'morals' intact, or to keep you from killing people, then god help us when you realise it's a fraud.

go team god

I'm an atheïst, but people who need a god too keep there ' morals ' intact and stop them from killing people need a psychiatrist :!:
