I really need some help to be honest, I am not a huge equipment geek. But I know I will get what I pay for.

That looks like a pretty good system. Unusual (and great) that the amp has a MM phono stage built in these days. Looks like the higher end speakers might need the dedicated stands to work at their best. Nothing wrong with getting a good balanced system now and upgrading parts of it a few years down the line. I've done that all my life and never regretted it.

Cheers Ian, good advice. Yeah think I am gonna go with the cheaper option for now, they still get glittering reviews from nearly everyone, I just think the higher end ones are more refined. The stands for those speakers are 200 quid though, and I am not spending that amount on stands haha. Looking forward to pay day now.

These are what I have and they are absolutely incredible. Don't know your budget, but these get great reviews everywhere which say they punch way above their weight for the price.

Speakers themselves are probably just at the very top end of my budget but on top of that dedicated stands look expensive; "In simple terms the Concept 20s are essentially the Award-winning 2020is with a better cabinet. " - what difference does that make to me?

Well, my friend has the 2020i speakers and they're also fantastic for the money (Qacoustics seem to make really great products across all budgets). From my experience the concept 20's differ in that they are much more detailed and handle mid and lower range frequencies with more clarity. I think that is where the larger cabinet helps with that aspect. I don't have the stands currently, but I did try them in the shop and the difference is really only for very picky audiophiles. The bass was slightly tighter, everything else seemed as great without them.

To be honest, it's all a case of just trying and seeing what you like. People get really fussy about speakers but it's all personal preference at the end of the day. You can pick up some incredible gear second hand, especially on a tighter budget.

After just completing my studies, I feel I've finally got time to get my decks back where I'm living (after 2-year away from them; one during travels, the other during studies). I cannot wait to bust open TH on a record player....

Aside: a guy I became friends with recently grew up being involved in sound-system building culture in Jamaica in the 70s...

...I've been throwing the idea around in my head about a really long-term project to try and build from scratch a decent home audio set up. No idea how much work/effort it would entail, or even where I'd start (other than approaching this guy!) but I imagine it could be a bit intense...

Aside x2: I heard there's like one guy that lives in a little house somewhere who is the most sought-after Mandolin maker in the British Isles where folks who often use Mandolins will request and wait for a personal-build instrument. How awesome would it be to be *that* guy? (or the sound-system building equivalent... or *any* construction equivalent, for that matter?!)

I listened to them before I purchased them (fully recommend this) - granted they are expensive and to get anything near their phenomenal potential you do need at least a mid to high end amplifier to drive them, but I don't have that yet, I bought them primarily as an investment for the future. But yes, you will not be disappointed, the clarity and bass extension is second to none. I would say there is little need for a sub with them because they actually thump out a lot of bass, though its very measured and musical.

I have spent silly money this year on hi fi equipment, but its my last opportunity for a while because I am going back to study and have taken out a loan to do so (eek) so I figured I'd treat myself while I had the chance cos it could be years til I have that kinda disposable cash again!

Resurrecting this thread for a quick question.

How do you guys maintain your collection? At the moment I am using a carbon brush before each play, but I have read various reports that they may have a tendency to damage the grooves over the long term.

Anyone got some tips?
