Isn't it :?: What is it then :?:

It would be closer saying that it is a philosphy, but that wouldn't be right either.

I believe it's more an exercise of the mind.

I'm atheist so to answer the topic: no I am not religious. However I do have approximately the same type of feelings that some religious people would say it is a holly revelation. These oceanic feelings emerge randomly sometimes during the consumption of psychotropic drugs, listening to BoC and similar artists or without any apparent exterior influence.

Tolerance and reason should be the things that governs us not hatred and misconceptions.

I grew up in an Episcopal family, went to church a lot...got baptized, did confirmation, etc. Very close to Catholicism in many ways. When I got old enough to think for myself I became Agnostic, but this semster I started taking an Anthropology course on Religion, which has made me an outright Atheist.

Since I started studying religion I have come to find that it has become an absolute crock of shit in modern times, used by many people to gain power and money from all of the desperate people in the world who have a desire or need to believe in something. People are afraid of not knowing things, and religion can answer a lot of life's unanswerable questions, but a lot of religious leaders exploit this for personal profit, war, power, etc...

I just don't really have any patience for people who believe in people living to be thousands of years old, filling a boat with every species we see on earth today so escape a global flood, parting seas, spending 3 days inside of a giant whale, giving virginal births and so on. All of that stuff was made to explain things that science can now tackle, they are obsolete today.

People might say I'm blaspheming the word of God, but all scriptures were written by men, all of whom are just as biased and imperfect as I am.

Even if it does, the book has been cut/n/pasted by...some group...in the year threehundredsomethingsomething. I wouldn't exacly call it the word of God...couse it aint.

And I'm still a christian

2 Timothy 3:16 "All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness,"

That the one your thinking of Cupz?

Still.. People whom abuse the word of God to gain power or gain wealth are man. This isn't any proof of God not existing I would say.
And don't forget evolution is a way of trying to understand where we came from, but has to many gaps and holes which cannot even be filled IMO. It's a loose theory, with a lot of wishfull thinking. How odd the story of the world beeing created may seem, it's still more legit than evolution theory.

Science is looking for answers. But with getting answers, there will pop up even more questions. Nothing is certain, everything can be discussed. There are still so many things with cannot be interpreted or cannot be explained. And there always will be.

Nowadays, people seem to grap and hold tight to every answer of 'proven' science theory they get. This makes me sad. People approach the world in tunnel vision. A good example is 'the da vinci code'. That book or movie was massively seen as 100 % truth and proof of how silly Christianity is.. People completely neglect the fact that most of his book is complete fiction, and a pile of bull crapp.

I believe that spirituality is here, and cannot be denied. Yes it is abused too many times by mankind, unfortunatly. But that doesn't give any proof of God not existing IMO..

And SI, you're last post really hits the spot for me. Totally agree!

You all talk too much about something you cannot comprehend.

Religion aside, I think there are some prerequisites and a nonlinear sequence to be fulfilled in order to think about god/the source of everything around us and to cope with extradimensional thinking:

For the start there should be 4 simple steps to be performed over years to prepare yourself for some coherent yet, logically, subjective comprehension about god:

-Usefulness -> You do something useful, for your development and your well being in your environment

-Self discovery -> You ask yourself about what kind of people we are, what kind of person you are, what is your position in your surrounding, what is your goal(s) if you have any, and why would you have such goals, what is the target and what is the source/root of your desires and needs

-Awareness check -> You simply position your self in particular settings no matter is that on micro or macro scale and simulate insignificance or significance of your body and your soul/awareness

-Reality check -> You question and filter information and situations, develop the set of own paradigms suitable for your mind set; if it 'clicks' and you are happy about it - stick to it until you find better or improved version of reality combo.

I think these should be baby steps, the basics. Hold on your horses, you jump on the task of perceiving god's mysteries as easily as going to the local smelly white trash bar to drink cheap booze with drunktards to say in extasy: "I see god!". :)

Carpe diem!

After these 4 micro steps, you need to get a glimpse about human thoughts, how they form, how people interact and why, you should learn all sets of reasons why this and why that and then to figure out when and how, from history, biology, chemistry, mathematics, psychology, medicine, astronomy and then, when you reasize insignificance of such an accumulated logic - you are on a good road - you can perform silly things like meditations, have exotic experiments with contemplative situations or brain chemistry experiements with ayahuasca and analogues etc. Then, after many many years, reviewing all these experiences and accumulated memory fragments you can finally say: now, I am at zero and now I can start! But the question is - from where and where to?... :)

Religion is when you become convinced of one viewpoint despite your complete inability to rationally justify doing so.

The God he's speaking of has absolutely nothing to do with anything religious. He's usually referring to the order of things. There is nothing even spiritual about it.

Here are a couple quotes that pretty much sum up my "religious" beliefs.

"Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it."
- Siddhartha Gautama

"I believe that the practice of compassion and love--a genuine sense of brotherhood and sisterhood--is the universal religion. It does not matter whether you are Buddhist or Christian, Moslem or Hindu, or whether you practice religion at all. What matters is your feeling of oneness with humankind."
- The Dalai Lama

I'm an atheist by the way. You could call me an agnostic because I accept the fact that I do not know everything. But in practice I am an atheist.. What may possibly be out there has no effect on my life. I hate to use the word atheist though.. I have no beliefs. I'm just Hunter.

Oh, another point I must make regarding religion, despite its obviousness:

90% of Christian music is a travesty of all that is original and good. I find it sad that most (not all, thankfully) Christians think that as long as phrase such as "praise Jesus" and "let the blessings flow" and all that silliness are present, then the music can be of near-worthless quality.

It's interesting to note that some (esp. Anthroposophists) have basically equated the Creative Drive with something instilled in one by Lucifer, the Angel which was cast out of heaven.

Luciferous adj. - illuminating, literally and figuratively

I see a connection. The Creative Drive, always pushing people to the edge of insanity, giving them strange complexes, creating caricatures of a normal person. Few can remain true to a religion while under the influence of a powerful Creative Drive.

Maybe that's why most Christian music (read: CCM) is largely unoriginal and rather mimic of former or current musical trends.

P.S. I am not a new-age psycho, but rather a simple openminded guy.

Christian music is minor-impaired. They use major chords 24/7. Without minor it is freed of drama and suspense and everything is just tralalala, birds singing, jesus smiling, sun shining, heretics burning on playful fire, oh joy...

You are so right about the minor-impaired quality. Growing up after church I'd always complain to my parents that all their songs were in major keys and left hardly any room for true emotional realization.

I appended my previous post, read!

Yes your parents are wise, they pretended that they are christians just to show you how it is to be coffined in a happy-go-lucky christian atmosphere, that's why became more aware to the emotional pain around you and now you do appreciate minor scale and avoid traps of dorian minor for sure.
