So some of were talking in the RFTD thread about Stanley Kubrick and I thought I'd start a thread for him here.

The Shining is my favorite movie of his, someone mentioned Ryan Fell's screening of it forwards and backwards (I haven't actually watched it yet) but I remember another article he wrote about all the switches from left hand side to right hand side (and vice versa), particularly in the twins scenes, but I can't find it, so if anyone happens to have a link to that I really wanted to reread it.

I was going to take some pictures of this book on Kubrick that I have but found it on Amazon. It comes with a piece of 70mm film from 2001 that was a print owned by Kubrick!

I love Shining too, it's my favorite from Kubrick with Orange clockwork, did you see the documentary about the movie, called "Room 237" ?

That Kubrick Archives book is fantastic. I think his run of films from 2001 to The Shining is peerless. I'm a big fan of Barry Lyndon (despite what the Room 237 film says about it).

This is an interesting video about the set design in The Shining and the deliberate impossibility of much of the interior of the Overlook Hotel.

2001 and A Clockwork Orange are two of my favourite movies.

Yeah, I've had the pleasure (and frustration / envy) of leafing through Ian's copy. A bloody lovely thing it is too, especially when his latest synth line was being looped in the background (you any nearer finishing that fella??).

I'm not going to bore you all with my take on Stanley Kubrick, suffice to say we should all be grateful that we lived at the same time of one of life's great auteurs. Truly if BOC are perfectionists in their field, Kubrick just went beyond. Beyond the infinite, if you will.

this is awesome. There is something about "wrong architecture" and wrong geometry that creates the most unsettling undercurrent. Lovecraft used it a lot too, and House of Leaves of course used it in a big way.

The tricycle scene is probably one of my favorite scenes in any movie ever. It's terrifying and hypnotizing. That set is just too perfect for words.

I wish I had a picture, but my friend painted the walls of her spooky little cabin to be like the carpet. It was amazing, but spooky to be in there. She decorated a few other things to be reminiscent of the Overlook, which is cool, but kind of scary if you're living in a cabin in the middle of the woods by yourself.

Yes, the word "perfectionist" gets thrown around for a lot of great artists, but Kubrick goes beyond in a mindblowing way.

Love him. Love love love love Kubrick. Up there with like John Carpenter and David Lynch as one of my fave directors. It's hard for me to pick a fave film..he has so many good ones. TBH I still haven't seen some of them, like Barry Lyndon or the entirety of Eyes Wide Shut, but regardless Kubrick made so many films that impacted me. Dr. Strangelove is one I can't get enough of..or 2001, Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket. The Shining though is suuuuuch a seminal film tho! I love it to death, and thinking about it now..I might watch it today. It's been a while

Also I have this really great book on him I snagged for free a few years back - Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures. Photos of him from childhood, working on set, family, and everything right up to his untimely death. If you can find a copy, and are a huge fan..worth having in your library!!

I've watched everything by Kubrick since 1962 (Lolita and upward). Good director, favorites are The Shining and A Clockwork Orange (the latter basically got me into alternative movies when I saw it as a teenager on TV, I was blown away). However, I didn't like Lolita a lot. Maybe I was too young at the time to get it. Are any of his movies before Lolita worth watching?

aww this brings back so many memories. I can't believe it's been 19 years, but I remember when the new girl in class was like "you've never seen the shining? It's the best movie" and gave me a vhs copy. She's still my best friend to this day.

I've only seen A Clockwork Orange, and I really enjoyed it.

That's an awesome friend for sure! Had a blast watching it...I love watching Jack Nicholson slowly lose it. Incredible. And those opening credits, and the soundtrack..sosososososooo good. Need it on vinyl, heh.
