Plasmids in Bioshock 2

So is there any real benefit to upgrading plasmids besides electroshock and winter blast? I've gotten every plasmid I can but I don't really see a combat use for anything besides those two... I mean, stuff like insect swarm is kinda funny and all but as far as effectiveness? I guess I could chalk it up to my playing style but what do you guys recommend?
