Anime

Wed Apr 27, 2011 12:20 am

Recently I've been watching quite a lot of Anime, but I have a hard time finding a series that i'd like.
I wondered if anyone has seen any that they can recommend or want to discuss.
I was actualy quite surprised that I couldnt find a single thread about Anime here.

I've just finished waching all of Cowboy Bebop (from the maker of Samurai Champloo),
and the movie, and I loved every moment of it. I'm realy into sci-fi, futuristic/dysotopian stuff,
plus Samurai Champloo was soo good that I had to check it out.
Im also waching Ergo-Proxy just now and a few episodes in and im starting to get into it, the animation is brilliant.

As for films:
Spirited away springs to mind as being just fantastic.
I liked Nausica and SteamBoy, they are good too.

Am I a lone nerd here? Please tell me not...

I love studio Ghibli movies and can't stand the rest :).

I haven't watched much, but Akira was an amazing movie and the whole Evangelion series was as well.

I've watched all of Toradora too, typically I'm not into shows that deal with relationships/daily life and drama of the sort but that show was perfect, the characters were beautiful.

Pantheon, if you haven't already, watch Akira and Neon Genesis Evangelion-- dystopian future sci-fi stuff ;)

man, cowboy bebop is.. pretty much the pinnacle.

AND THAT SOUNDTRACK
the seatbelts.. yoko kanno.. so great.
yoko kanno also does the music for ghost in the shell.

FLCL is also pretty good. only 6 episodes long, though. pretty just.. .. i dunno man, you know, whatever, it just, yeah

You are so right, the music for Cowboy Bebop was fantastic, as it was for Ghost in the shell. I didnt realise this was the same chap. I'd forgoten all about Ghost in the shell, what a great film that is. I havent seen GITS2 yet though, I think someone told me its totaly different or something.
What FLCL by the way?

Me and some of my friends watched Akira a while ago actualy, it realy is a great film. Sadly I cant remember all that much of it, I was actualy quite stoned at the time. Thanks for the tip about Neon Genesis Evangelion, I havent heard of that. I'll do some googleing.

Lets hope this thread doesnt get derailed with anyones suggestions of Japanese tenticle porn

Spirit away is in my top ten best movie ever...And Cowboy beebop is certainly the best anime series I known.

Ghost in the shell is in my top ten too, there is also Pompoko, it's really interesting and more than a simple child animated movie, (I mean...They used their huge TESTICULES to fight !) made by Takahata (the legendary Ghibli man), who also made the great, but one of the saddest movie ever made, : Grave of the Fireflies

I am sure you already seen Mononoke, very beautiful but very dark...I enjoyed Ponyo on the cliff also, it's not the deepest Ghibli movie but it's was really nice.

Cobra is an old and cult anime series, a great and fun sci fi adventure, I recommand it.

( Ghost in the shell THE movie or the series ? The movie soundtracks was made by Kenji Kawai and it's one of my favorite sci fi soundtrack. Avalon soundtrack was also made by Kenji Kawai and it's an incredibly beautiful soundtrack, and the movie is also directed by Mamoru Oshii)

FLCL.. man
i really don't even know how to describe it.

i guess you can watch it online here: http://www.animefreak.tv/watch/fooly-co ... nline-free

i don't even know if it's good.. i've watched the whole thing like three times.
i don't know what to think of it

Yes! An anime thread! Sadly, I think most of the good sci-fi anime's I know of have already been mentioned. There's not a whole lot of good sci-fi out there. The only thing I can think of that hasn't already been mentioned is Gundam Wing which I liked a lot as a kid, but I don't know if I'd like it as much now. Another good one was Outlaw Star. If you like Cowboy Bebop, you'd probably like that too, but it wasn't as good as Cowboy Bebop.

I've pretty much fallen off the radar with anime and mostly just read manga now, most of which is fighting/fantasy stuff. One good fantasy manga I could suggest is Berserk, but if you're only interested in anime, the Berserk anime was ok, but they stopped right when it starts to get good in the manga. I've heard they're making a new one however. But Berserk is far from sci-fi/dystopian future, so......

edit: Oh, another good one is Trigun. Seriously one of the best anime's ever. The manga was even better. Trigun is a mix of sci-fi and old western, and it's mostly old western, but it has its sci-fi moments. The manga is probably more sci-fi'ish.

Big O's all right. sometimes.

if you could combine batman and gundams and throw it all into a city that collectively has amnesia, that would be Big O

but that butler is now a female android

Wed Apr 27, 2011 3:52 am

Trigun (my favorite of all time)
First episode: http://youtu.be/pLRpi2_QdA0

Blood: The Last Vampire (Beautiful)
Cowboy Bepob (Classic)
FLCL ( A trip )
Lupin the third (Can be slow but still very fun)

Then you have movies like Akira, Spirited Away, Ponyo

Just my 2 cents

HOW DID I FORGET TRIGUN!?

case closed is also good.

Sinchiro Wantanabe, the one who directed Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, produced a series that ran from '08 to '09 titled Michiko to Hatchin. This was the very same studio that also developed Champloo.

Image

The series retains much of the East/West mixture as in Bebop and Champloo, but it takes place in a fictional South American country that seems to incorporate cultural cues from Brasil. There were several elements of the series that reminded me much of the film City of God/Cidade de Deus.

It's a good watch.

i went through a huge anime phase about 10-12 years ago. it's over now.

i still have fond memories of discovering weird japanese animation on the sci fi channel back before pokemon and dbz ushered it into the american mainstream a little more. stuff like venus wars and akira, dominion tank police and lensman.

i have very little taste for the stuff most people herald these days as great anime. i don't care for cowboy bebop or flcl at all. studio ghibli is alright but doesn't really blow me away, either.

i still like robotech.

i can't stand glossy, shiny, "attractive"-looking anime that's all tits and bizarre outfits. it just makes me want to cut out the aggravating voices, bizarre stories and forgettable characters and just watch straight-up pornography.

Am upping my anime intake myself hehe. Ghost in the Shell 2 deals with a very different philosophy to the first one but has the same characters and is pretty good. Not as good as the first though, that was so great.

Who could forget the Tenchi series? A guy comes across a goddess and ends up living with her and loads of other girls. The menace of the first episode...good memories :)

don't know if it's been mentioned but what about Gundam?

Wed Apr 27, 2011 1:34 pm

I've never watched an anime other than Dragonball (not even sure if it's anime lol)

But I saw an opening to an anime which looked amazing, and the intro song had some girl dieing whom was dripping blood from her fingers or something, it looked pretty filthy but I am still looking for this anime, and have no idea which it was. I know that this is really vague, but maybe 1 of you guys knows which 1 this is?

Title was pretty weird as well, some English sentence but as far as I remember it had an eastern language with English subtitles.

You probably won't even understand what I've just said, but it would be amazing if 1 of you knows which anime this is.

Yeah, I understand where you're coming from, I roll my eyes a bit at that stuff sometimes, but I guess I'm used to it since I didn't get into anime until after the ushering in you mention. Hell, I was still a little kid when that happened so there's no way I could have been into it before that. But yeah, I try to avoid anime's that are too fanservicey. I like bizarre stories though, that's what got me into anime, was a nice change from the monotony of the stuff in the US.

Sorry, I'm not sure, there are lots of animes with blood and girls dying. Maybe if you could describe the girl a little more, like what color hair she had or something?

I have no idea Ender, it's a few years ago ;(

Oh yeah, DBZ, that was my childhood 8)

Definitely.

Avoid the new remake movies (Evangelion 1.11, 2.22, etc), though. Much of the character depth that gives it emotional meaning is lost, the new twists are very trite, and they're frequently offensively tone-deaf where character handling is concerned, and translated staff interviews have shown this to be entirely the result of writer/editor incompetence rather than any sort of forward planning.
