Turns out BoC aren't the only ones who are into these

Check out The Conet Project ( http://www.irdial.com/conet.htm ) a 4-CD box set of Number Stations recordings from the last 20 odd years(with an very informative booklet). Extremely creepy yet fascinating listening. To be honest, you're not going to sit down and listen to this after a hard day at the swamp, but it's a unique recording, and just who is transmitting them??

I believe the sample that BOC used on 'Gyroscope' was a short wave radio recording made by Sean Booth of Autechre.

All the Conet Project tracks are on the internet archive here:

I first heard number stations in the 80s - such as the infamous Gong from the GDR and DFD21 which was a strong signal here in the UK. There's not as many number stations around as there used to be though I have had some success recently hearing E11 Oblique and E7 The English Man.

The infamous Lincolnshire Poacher is no more though (good job I recorded some samples before she went off air).

Here's a good site to get started. Best of luck!

Jesus, was it you indeed?
To flirt unkindly with my greed
Promising eternal life
When you knew it was not right?
When you knew that what I'd need was willingness and comfort there
