My Cover/Remix of Whitewater

I had intended making a straight cover of whitewater, but as I was making it I started playing around until I had a realy strange remix thing going on. It came together realy quick, taking about 4 hours in total today, I tried to keep it short but sweet. Its a remix only in the sence that the some notes are all different, but i didnt sample the original tune.

I know that whitewater seems to be lots of peoples near favourite tune, so please try to listen to it with open ears, and dont hate on me .

The percussion in the intro sounds nice and accurate, though the chord synth seems to come in very abruptly, and doesn't really sound right to my ears.

Ah, i'll have another listen and try to smooth that out a little. I think I had noticed that earlier as well now that you mention it.

Drum beats sound great...

The synth chords have amazing layers! SO GOOD!!

The whole timing of the song throws me off a bit, for everything is held one longer beat than the original, but not a big deal, I still love it. Very refreshing.

AN IMPORTANT THOUGHT:

Great work. The drum patterns are spot on. For this track is is crucial to find the right voicing for that synth. I know you weren't necessarily covering Whitewater exactly, but even so I would say that the edges of that synth need to be smoothed a tad to sound less 'vst'ish, if you know what I mean.

I totaly agree. There is just so much going on with their patch thats it was just too hard to figure out how to get that sound. I didnt spend that long on it admitedly and i'll probably spend some time trying to get an accurate sound sometime or other. I think its the hardest synth patch of theirs that i've tried to remake.

I have a few ideas for it though that i'll try out, probably in an real cover of whitewater.

Hardest synth sound to remake would be 5.9.78. So much going on there, sounds way too deep and unique to ever replicate, I've tried but only barely got there.

Anyway it's a nice cover. Felt pretty similar to the original track throughout the beginning, especially the percussion as others have said.

Oh! Really like it! I think the "hollow" sound in the intro was great. Around 1.57- was also brilliant. I'm impressed, it's very hard to do a cover on a already perfect song but your version was really amazing.

(Though, I don't know the first thing about making music, so my opinion may not really count.. )

I have always wanted to do an acoustic cover of 5.9.78 but would need to spend a long time working those chords out. I don't think i've ever heard a cover of it!! Someone make one!!!

EDIT: I forgot of course that Synthetrix covered it a while back and did a great job! Listening to it now.

I always liked to know how do you guys make nice music like that.

When I was younger I used to play on Fruity Loops, but I couldn't make any nice sound. Just play piano on computer keyboard with some effects, on it, they were like filters, and it was fun.

But what does professionals use to make beautiful songs? I mean, of course you have to know music theory and things like that but what software is good to get started? Would you guys recommends any books?

Anyway, Pantheon, your track is absolutely great. Looking forward your next cover!

Hey dayvan,

All I can recomend is that you get a copy of Ableton Live and just play around with it as much as possible. Perhaps the most usefull thing I did was spend a good amount of time learning the exact science of synthesisers, you will find subtractive synth theory popping up all over this kind of music making.
Most people seem to find their own little tricks and methods using in the programs of their choice, I find there are loads of ways to abuse your software to produce sounds it wasnt intended to make.

For the most part I would recomend you spend as much time as possible playing around and enjoying making your music, I find that reading a book is only realy usefull when you have previously encountered the stuff its talking about beforehand. It then seems easy to relate too and retain the message the book.

That said after reading this board for a long time, its clear that something as intimate as music making must be regarded very personaly when concidering how to progress in it. Every one seems to find different paths to follow. Playing around with the tools you have is the only way I know to know where to go next.
