Hey folks, I really wanted to do another ambient piece, so I came up with this one: http://soundcloud.com/747music-1/747music-striving-after-wind

There are still a few touch ups I wanna do, but this is basically it.

Very obviously inspired by Biosphere and Steve Roach.

Please leave a comment.

Hope you enjoy. :D

Didn't noticed your post before.

The bass reminded me of those anti ant pilars in Half Life 2.
I'm not the right person to judge music like this as it is not really up my alley.
What I did notice is that you always reply to others and that you at least deserve a 10+ comment topic! I've heard some complaining in the past by musicians on this board for not getting much response... where are they now? ;)

My only critique would be that this kind of music works well as background sound for late night meditations or reading, etc. and I think GAS is the perfect example of someone who gets the formula right by always having a constant pulse and not too much high end on any of the beats. His music is not necessarily an active listening experience for me and that helps me to be able to listen to it on repeat and never get tired of it. With the beats being so up front I feel like there should be more melodies or things going on to keep my attention from waning.
Here is an example of what I mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grnADjaf ... re=related

Your synth tone is similar to this style, but the beats are too much like BOC, and BOC packs their tracks with all these little intricacies that lend to it being more of an active listening experience. I would say to make it more dreamy and less "punchy" would be the way to go when working in this genre.

Wow! Why haven't I heard of GAS before!?!?!?! None of you told me about this guy until now. I really like the song you gave me a link to. Will be coming back to this artist for sure.

But yeah, what I was going for was something to sleep to... or at least daydream to. I put the "punch" in to make it a little different than my other ambient tracks, and I think it worked somewhat well.

i agree with potentially coloring it up a little more in order to maintain interest. as well as maybe bringing down the highs on the beat some, to make it blend more. also, i found myself craving for the high hat to swing, just a little. or at least do something to drive the beat. the way it is right now feels slightly too rigid. even if the high hat sort of stumbled around a bit, i think the piece would flow better. it's specifically when the high hat cuts out that i feel momentum being lost. other than that, its a really pleasant listen. the massive yet subtle backdrop is wonderfully psychedelic. in keeping with this big sound, a tinge of long reverb on the drums would give the piece a lot more space. keep it up!

I'm really into your textures but somehow the beats make the track feel like it's going somewhere when really it wants to be more ambient. It feels like it can't decide whether to go with a groove or embrace stillness. With the beats present I think it needs some new melodic element in the final third as it feels like it should be building up to something like that.

If I were mixing it, I would have the drums drifting in and out of focus as if they are being consumed by the surrounding texture. :)
