"Isolation can get negative at times," continues Mike, "because you start to feel like you're being arrogant or that we're doing it because we hate people so much. But it's not like that at all, It's more about the fact that we don't want to ruin the art by making our lives more important than the music. Because our lives are just like that of any other artist: we're just trying to create something special."

How did you cope with this situation? Do you feel comfortable with the idea that a lot more people are gonna hear your music, giving it momentum, building up a hype rather than letting it "capture a nostalgic feeling buried somewhere in our mind", as one journalist so accurately wrote.

Mike: "We'd much rather that people find our music by themselves, you know, so that it's something that feels like it belongs to them. If it was up to us there would be no promotion for our music at all."

What are the advantages of working as a duo?

MS: "Definitely quality control. Some artists, which I will not mention here, publish too much and often too average material. If they had a partner, he could tell them: I understand why you did it, but it's just shit. So we do it. Actually, we produce a lot of tracks, of which I write the most and Marcus tells me then what he thinks of it. Before others hear our tracks, we've both found them good enough."

"Classic" is certainly the most used adjective when referring to your music...

Mike: "We indeed try to compose music that can stand the test of time. That's why we avoid assembling pieces that belong to a specific musical style. We would like people who listen to our records in twenty years to still find something special beyond the music."

Geogaddi uses a lot of voices...

Mike: "We like the sound of voices. You don't need to understand the meaning of the words, sometimes just hearing a voice or a certain word is enough. We like the idea of suggesting certain words or phrases. In the future, we would like to create something entirely vocal. In fact, we have already recorded tracks in this style."

(2013)

I recently talked to the guys from Daft Punk, same generation as you, getting close to becoming 40, who have been listening to music all these lives; and they can feel a bit paralyzed by the weight of the history of music resting on their shoulders.

Sandison: "Not us. Music is an almost endless series of possible combinations of notes, melodies, chords, textures, rhythms and so on. In the short period of time people are composing music we only tried a few, I'm very curious to find out where we'll find ourselves in the future."

What do you have planned next? Fans around the world are hoping for a live tour…

Marcus: "We are thinking about doing live shows. We've been running tests in our rehearsal space lately. That said, we also have a few releases already lined up for the near future, so it's a matter of timing—seeing how everything plays out. Let's just say, we're keeping our options open."

Curious what they mean by “entirely vocal.” Like singing? Tracks derived out of vocals and turned into synth?

The amount of stuff that they have said over the last three decades to be working on, hoping to do, leaning towards has now grown into a rather large amount of vaporware. I am not a skeptic just on a whim to be crappy, I am because the evidence in the data shows it.

Data over wishful thinking kind of thing.

Six sigma in this case, but heh, peer review me.

Or maybe something like this?

Sandison: "We made a lot of our percussion sounds by just wandering about with a portable DAT, denting things with drumsticks. On some tracks, we get people we know to record their voices making weird phonetic sounds. We chop it all up and use the plosive and fricative sounds for percussion and so on. All of the percussion on "An Eagle in Your Mind" was done with my girlfriend's voice."

Can we speculate why they recently hid the remixes playlist (from the playlists tab)?

On 3rd of September 2025 they removed the Remixes playlist from the Playlists tab.
The Remixes playlist still remained visible on the Home tab.

On this same day, they added 11 extra One Very Important Videos at the top of the Videos playlist.

By making the Remixes playlist invisible, they have shifted the focus to the Videos playlist, which contains the obvious political message. I think this was their intention.

perhaps they're indicating that they think we should be less concerned about a new Boards of Canada release at the moment, and more concerned about something else

That could explain adding One Very Important Thought not once, not twice, not four times, not eight times, but eleven times. Like really making sure we get the picture. Or they're mad about something specific. Or both. Anyways it's clear it was a very intentional move to highlight the message of the song.

The UK is an insane place to live right now. Their message is just on time with the current news. Its odd, because I assumed the brothers kept away from the news. I guess this was big enough to get them to tell the warp intern to add 11 videos to their playlist.

I'm genuinely so curious how the communication behind that looks, assuming it's really not just some intern doing random stuff. Are there actual Emails by Mike or Marcus along the lines of "Next month's schedule goes as follows: 8 new likes on Instagram comments inquiring about our new album in week 1. Follow up with 11 fan videos of One Very Important Thought on week 4." At this point I feel like, if there really is some hidden meaning behind it, it's more likely they're doing it themselves. Marcus used to be on Twitter, I think a potential Mike profile exists on it, too, so I don't see why they might not also be doing some BoC social media on their toilet breaks.

Based on their interviews, we can safely say that they are well informed about contemporary issues. It therefore seems plausible to me that they use as many sources as possible to inform themselves, including social media. The accounts below have been claimed years ago as a countermeasure to squatters.

It’s ridiculous to think they need a third party to sporadically update these accounts. The opposite however, if their accounts had a lot of daily/weekly activity, I could see they might have a third party doing it. But they’re no Taylor Swift, right?

I'm positive they can manage this little activity themselves. I also think they'd rather have no activity at all than risk an intern messing with their account or public image.

2005 interview

You are very attentive to yourself. You are self-marketing geniuses.

"Oh God ... you think?"

Definitely yes.

"Mah… who knows… Our secret is that we have no secrets! Warp still sees that we are good at managing ourselves, even if we may be good at it by chance; and then lets us do it. Years ago it was different, we were less confident in ourselves and we relied a little on what the record companies told us. Fortunately, we have reversed the course. However, we are honest. We are not manipulators. We, between one record and another, disappear. We want the music to speak. When you start to do too much marketing, the least experienced listener gets annoyed and begins to wonder if the musician cares more about his music or becoming famous. Look at us: if we wanted to work more on marketing, a clever idea could be to open hundreds of sites in our name, to invade the web. We would talk a lot about us! Instead, if you go and take a look at our site, you will see that it is very rotten, the worst html work you have seen in years! It is no coincidence: it is that we want to clearly show that it is not in our interest to sell ourselves well, we are focused on the music and that is where we want others to concentrate when it comes to judging ourselves."

Yeah, they are probably right here among us. Observing. Cringing, and further delaying the album entirely because of this thread. I've got my suspicions on who it could be... but I'm not telling

That is the whole point we are here and when LP5 drops we'll be speculating immediately about LP6.

There's still a few days of the year left. Always still chance it might be this year!
