This one just made me cry the first time i heard (saw) this. For some reason this sounds more like some intro or prelude, which matches perfectly with the track 'All Reason Departs'.

Deep time is the concept of geological time that spans billions of years, far beyond the scale of human experience. It provides the temporal framework for understanding the formation and evolution of Earth, the development of life, and the slow-moving processes that shape planetary change.

I think it tells the story of the evolution of life. It starts out fuzzy which goes on for half of the track (evolution is slow) and segues into the climax which then fades out as that particular lifeform I guess goes extinct.

Okay, the way the previous track leads into this one was odd in the best way possible, I don't think a piece of music has ever created the weird, stretched/momentum feeling I got when it cuts to this one. It has a very different energy compared to hearing it on its own as a result. It's so strange but in a way that's lingering, like trying to remember a scene/mood shift in a dream

To me this is one of a handful of examples why I prefer the continuous mix: Inferno plays like movie.

Just imagine if this was never previewed as tape 05 and we were all hearing it for the first time in the context of this album. We’d all be losing our shit over it. I know it was provocative when it was tape 05 but man, thinking of this coming up unexpectedly after labrynth would’ve blown some minds for sure.

It's hilarious, any song on the album would have made an excellent single, but would have lost the surprise of hearing it for the first time in sequence on the album. Naraka would have been a bangin single, but I'm much happier I heard it for the first time in the album with no anticipation leading up to it. But if anything had to be the first song released, Deep Time left an incredible first impression. Felt like the clouds were parting and the angels were coming down from heaven to announce new BoC lol. It'll be interesting as time goes on to see it more in context with the album than with Tape 05, since on my relistens of Inferno I still can't help but think of that videotape.

If I were to be hypercritical, this fits the 13 year transition from the barren wasteland ending of TH to introduce Inferno _so_ incredibly well, that I'm almost a little sad to see it on the album where it jars slightly. I think it could've been left as Tape 05 as part of the historical path. Still a gorgeous tune of course
I remember when this was fields

This track clicked for me when I found out it was Deep Time. And it makes sense that it was the first one we all heard.

It sounds like waking up from a deep sleep or stasis after a very long rest. Those fluttery strings at the beginning feel very much like slowly waking up. I also get this wild imagery of birds flying in a deep hazy grey / green setting.

It is very dramatic when everything kicks in. Retains a lot of the cinematic presence of Harvest.

Still wondering why they uploaded this to YT as Tape 05 and not just Deep Time. Don't think there is much to it but, just an interesting choice. Maybe they wanted the first impact of new music to be more of a mystery. Then give fans a proper teaser with Introit and Prophecy?

Yes, it seems like Tape 05 meant fifth album. And releasing the video outside of a typical album announcement created this potent invocation effect.

I resisted the idea of the music being on Inferno initially, however, it’s starting to open up for me.

There was some conversation about this somewhere around the boards, but I believe using "Tape 05" was intended both to tell us their fifth album was coming and also to tie its lineage into the 4 leaked tapes (Old Tunes 1 & 2, R35TT, and BOC Maxima).

I think this is reinforced by the fact that we--in spite of the incredibly unlikely odds of this happening--got all 4 of those old tapes in high quality for the first time in the 4 months leading up to Inferno's release. I can't shake the feeling this was somehow orchestrated by the band or others in their circle.

Before Inferno, there were 4 mainline albums, 4 leaked tapes, even 4 EPs (not counting Peel Sessions which is more like a "live" album), so it could even further be intended to tie everything together in a final new music release. Anything after this, I feel, will be either "compilation" releases of unreleased material or maybe, who knows, the 5 pre-Twoism albums. (Hell, even look at Introit's 5 beats per measure time signature! Pentagrammatic!)

All speculation aside, I love how the melodic motif in this track is reprised later in the album. Beautiful work.

I remember exploring the concept of deep time years ago on Wikipedia, I still return to it from time to time. Even me, someone who has immersed in cosmology most of my life, I am amazed by the immensity of time, the human mind cannot even begin to factor in something so immense.

The mind doesn't boggle, it goes like "Error trying to process this because no."

Could Tape 05 be a reference to the 5th Dimension ? Reading about the physics of that it seems in line with a lot of B0C themes from all of their albums.

Also in new age spirituality - quoting from Wikipedia - "n 5D, it is believed that linear time (past, present, and future) is experienced simultaneously as a unified whole,"

The past inside the present ?

Enjoying reading all the interpretations on here .. this is my first post :-)

Welcome to the boards Boards!

That's an interesting detail, I'll have to look at that. I'm in the middle of reading The Divine Comedy right now because of Inferno, and, also because of Inferno, I have Julian Barbour's The End Of Time waiting on my coffee table for me to read next. Then I'm finally diving into Odyssey and Illiad because I did not know it was referenced so much in the Comedy and I really should have read them years and years ago!

Thanks Redd !
Wow that's an impressive reading list !
There's a lot of current science on whether the 5th dimension exists - and the brief amount i've read is really interesting.

the manipulated/murky vocals at the end of this remind me greatly of the end of 'Ready Lets Go.'

I'm not sure if this has been pointed out already, but I have found that the chord progression (not the harps) is an interpolation of this Peter Gabriel track from The Last Temptation of Christ. I know some of his 90s work has been referenced as a possible influence for Inferno, but listen and you will see that it is in fact the same exact chord progression used in Deep Time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39QtG_G ... dx&index=5

As a long-term fan of both BOC, FSOL and DCD, I can’t believe this gem has evaded me. I am listening to the album right now - thanks Astral Deeps!
