Exactly what my mind went to was, "The Tuss"

Redd Panderson wrote:*Puts on tin foil hat* what if all vaporwave is secretly BOC taking the proverbial piss / trying things out and seeing what sticks / making some money on the side?

Or what if at least some of the pre-Twoism album fakes actually ARE them making some low-effort music presented as obvious fakes of albums from their own lore? That wouldn't feel out of place alongside the goofy video they ostensibly did where they edited samples over someone's video of them describing BOC music theory using a piano.

Now were talking!

Ah yes... same here.

I agree about the flexi disc. Very good points made. Speculation meters are definitely rising. Not quite time to consult the astrology charts yet, but getting warmer...

...maybe they've been doing that for a long time? Mike does own a recording business.

I'm convinced they'll have either released stuff under another name, produced stuff for other artists under a different name or done other commercial/soundtrack work under other names. Given some of the big names they'll have had on the phone over the years about production work, I'm sure they'll have been tempted (there's one interview from c. MHTRTC / Geogaddi where they talk about taking a phone call from "someone between Beck and God" in terms of fame - I'm *convinced* it would have been Madonna).

As for new material. The album still feels to me like a farewell; mainly because of "You Retreat..." - but I also have a feeling there'll be an EP like there was with Campfire & Trans Canada.. - total speculation, but I think there'll be an EP with You Retreat.. as the lead track (it feels like the most "standalone" track in the same way that Dayvan Cowboy did on TCH and the different visuals at the listening party suggest as standalone video for a single).

What with “The Word Becomes Flesh” in the Backrooms end credits, I would definitely like to hear new BoC in soundtracks but I’m guessing any commissioned film/tv work would probably not be done under the Boards monicker.

Hadn't read that before, lovely little interview, if a little tricky to read due to translation sometimes. The more I read about them the more I respect them as people.

I'm just not convinced they've stealth released under a different name, though I'd love it if they had, don't get me wrong. With the exception of P Primers ofc. But I think BoC may have deliberately cultivated or maybe just not dissuaded the idea that there might be stuff out there.

These huge gaps between releases, and the fact we know that they're always recording or used to be, I just think it's natural that people ask "where is all that music going". There's always this huge fan appetite for more, we saw it in the aftermath of TH being released and all the "where is the other half of this double album" thing, which was all based on one bit of speculation that got quoted as fact.

So I just don't think any of that material ever made it out the door, I don't think its out there to find, sadly. But as long as people believe there is. the people that need a push to do so go out looking for it will do so and explore more, listen to other music. That's why we have SxT, too. "Ooo could any of this be unreleased BoC?" Well, every time we thought it was, it wasn't. But look at all the pearls we found along the way.

They actually mention in that interview above that they were negotiating a soundtrack deal for a big feature film, back in 2005, I'm assuming it went ahead but none of us have a clue what it is, or what their alias was.

What if it didn't, and that's why we have Inferno?

Valid point. I just can't help feel that if they were negotiating big soundtrack deals in 2006 that it wasn't a one off thing and that they eventually entered that realm. It's an enticing thought at least. But yes, anything is possible, maybe it was the only offer they ever had.

I think the flexi disc was a little wink that something else is beyond inferno. Maybe I will circle back here a few years later and be right. I am really speculating on the amount of time, less so the concept of another boards of canada album. Now we are entering probability....

How long is eternal even supposed to be anyway? Surely there, and now, and when. Something must also happen in-between...

We all (presumably) subscribed to a Boards of Canada mailing list during the lead up to Inferno.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't anticipating an email from them in my inbox someday!

That is very true. I wonder what the future updates implies? Seems pretty silly just to grab everyones email for something we already know is here... All those emails! I don't know but, the next album release by boards of canada might be even spookier than we can imagine

Well, they already used the emails for notifications for listening parties etc.

It really sounds like just an operation to rake in tons of emails to send newsletters, it would be aligned with the overall feeling of "milking the cash cow" that this release has felt compared from previous ones from BoC.

Yeah, but can you really blame Warp for capitalising on this? First BoC album in 13 years and probably the last for another couple decades, Aphex isn't really releasing new music these days, Autechre have retired from making albums, and Squarepusher isn't shifting units like he used to. If I was in their position, I'd probably be milking it too. At the end of the day, it's a business.

I mean, warp is certainly allowed to make some money, doubt they're getting very rich off all the weird music they release. And they seem to be funneling some of that to fresh talent like fire-toolz, so it's all good. Wouldn't really describe it as capitalizing.

Do think boc's aesthetics lends itself better to self-releasing independently and just go full music70.

I have a suspicion that warp deliberately held some releases back from their legacy artists ( of which I count boc as one) until they could release them all in a relatively close period. To kind of say "we're not putting this out until we can set up a 90s act legacy wave around it"

That's marketing, and I'm sure it's done with the best intentions of "this will do best if we release it this way" but I disagree with that opinion
