I had an idea.

BOC Numberwang: The Game!

Rules:

One: draw a tarot card.

Two: shuffle all Boards of Canada tracks and select one at random.

Three: Using the tarot card and any details about the track or album, write a brief paragraph (or a dissertation, I won't yuck your yum) describing why they are connected. Embrace your inner tinfoil hat. No genAI please–let’s see YOUR creativity! Allow yourself to be more aware of your pathway through this life. When it is necessary, you can program yourself, and be able to dream the information you require. This will only happen if you choose. Ready, now…

I'll start:

Card: The Chariot
Song: Buckie High

The chariot is the 7th card of the major arcana. Buckie High is track 30 of Old Tunes Volume 2. That's four 7s, plus 2 for the second volume = 30. That’s why Buckie High is such a stable track rhythmically with forward momentum: it is riding forth with divine, balanced confidence (four 7s) toward completion (+2). Buckie High was the high school that BOC attended, so this song is clearly intended to convey the learner's journey–the chariot–toward mastery, as heard in the old tunes era tapes.

I had The Knight Cup (cupz?) and Skyliner.

They're definitely connected through theme of suspended water and SEVEN, as a cup holds liquid romance and the sky holds evaporated romance. Then after getting intoxicated by the liquid romance, you drop the cup and it rolls royce. You keep your head up and the lightning comes out and touches the cloud like a reversed lightning. Twelve.

Not to get off-topic but I couldn't not share this in response for those who might be interested:

A loosely BOC-inspired Oracle Deck--it's not tarot, but rather pulls on the I Ching, I guess.

Not sure how I'll like it, but I was curious enough to preorder one. Ships in July/August, so I'll see soon! A more overtly BOC tarot deck would be interesting.

Love your read Cupz! Twelve!

Ok, I can't not ask now; what tarot suit would each BOC album be? What do we do with the extra album? Give it the major arcana?

I'm feeling this:

Music Has The Right To Children = water / cups

The Campfire Headphase = air / swords

Inferno = fire / wands

Which leaves either Tomorrow's Harvest or Geogaddi for earth / pentacles, and honestly both seem fitting for that. The other would get major arcana perhaps.

Or, we could build our own oracle out of BOC's discography:

Maybe 5 suits for the 5 albums (special minor arcana), and two other arcana. One inspired by the EPs which would be superarcana (more overarching, major), and one inspired by the leaked old tunes era tapes that would be subarcana (more esoteric, ghost cards).

Just brainstorming here!
