i really like this album but it took a minute to drop with me. part of the problem was the fact that I find el-p's flow really hard to make out... you should look up the lyrics here

found this sweet record store and got a few U2 b-sides from joshua tree, "johnson" by the pontiac brothers, and "2541" by grant hart. they also have this room there of boxes of records that are either slightly damaged, or nobody wanted them, so we got one of those. about 50-60 records for free, not a bad deal. there were a few really good ones in there.

Well- I really, really enjoyed "I'll Sleep When You're Dead."

This record feels much more raw, maybe like 36 Chambers era Wu-Tang, but with that 'intelligent hip-hop' sensibility. Only.... the beats seemed erratic, and, like you said, his voice is buried in the mix.

I think this highlights some of my ambivalence about this sort of hip-hop.. sometimes it seems like the rapper is drowing in his own production. The same problem has plagued DJ Shadow and others.. it just seems like rap demands a certain economy of space that other genres don't necessarily need. Hip Hop struggles with that.

Anyways, I'm babbling. I'll try again. The record is well thought of in independent circles it seems. Wouldn't be the first time my knee-jerk reaction to a record was totally wrong (cf. Music Has the Right to Children  )

Just bought The Private Press by DJ Shadow.
I particularly like 'Giving Up the Ghost' so far.

nah I totally agree actually. out of interest, have you heard 'Funcrusher Plus' by Company Flow? Co Flow are the group that established El-P as a serious figure in this end of hiphop... the production is FAR more sparse on this record than on his solo work, and it's basically the record that turned me on to non-mainstream hiphop (after a diet of public enemy, de la soul and what have you... I loved this stuff when I was 13-14, and still do )

Also, you should check out Mr. Lif, imo the shining star of the def jux stable...

I just bought 'Cut /// Copy's' album 'In Ghost Colours'. It's pretty good. It feels very psychedelic 80's.

For only $10 Canadian, it's a good deal.
