Soooo, i'm a 4th year graphic design student. One of my projects this term is to make a book. I could choose some subjects, like typography, architecture, and some others. Or, i could choose my own subject.

As you might understand, boc was one of the first thing that popped into my mind. So i'm going to make a bocbook. :) It has to be at least 24 pages, but will probably be more. Not too many tho, since i also got other things to do.

Ofcourse, the boc pages will be my main info source. And stuff like the biography and discography will come in the book. Some quotes ofcourse, but what i wanted to ask you all;

Do you have any suggestions, tips, whatever. Please tell me, then i might use it.

When it's done i'll probably post it here. :D

i'm interested to see how it will turn out.

are you going to create your own boc imagery for the book?

if so, i think you should cover as many mediums as possible (photographs, paintings, graphic designs, sketches etc.).

You could make one spread real conceptual: One page would be interesting BoC influenced elements, then the facing page would be of reflective mirror material. So when you open the spread part way, you see the dualism of the elements from the facing page mirrored in the reflective page... a sort of twoism? Dunno... first thing that popped into mind.

(Smart Papers makes a Kromekote Collection that has reflective papers... not sure if they are available in Europe.)

Other: If the whole collection of BoC info is too overwhelming, you could always do the book on just one ablum. A spread per song.

Me too, hehe. :)

Partially i think. I mean, they have some great designy stuff themselves. Enough to fill a book like i'm going to make i think. But since i'm a graphic student, i will also design a lot myself.

I thought about that indeed. I might do that when i have enough time.

C'mon people, 123 views, 2 comments. I need more! :D

Just anything you would like to see in a bocbook (or what reaally shouldn't be left out), tell me. I can at least get some inspiration from it if I don't use it anyway. :)

Lets see. You need a turquoise hexagon somewhere. A diving station, and perhaps some Nova Scotia Robots?

Ditto on the reflective inner cover thing.

Also ditto on the page-per-song thing. Just have some appropriate imagery and write something about the song, BUT, make it all connected, as if it were a narrative about the Sandisons taking a long drive and experiencing all sorts of things.
I don't know, just an idea.

i was flipping through a photography book and they used a sort of wax-paper-like substance to separate pages. The effect it gave was like a misting or blurring of the picture to come. It was like waxed tissue paper or something. Look into it, it gives a great effect. Something similar, although less transparent, is used in the artwork of Radiohead's Kid A. There are pencil sketches on top of it.

Another thing I would experiment with is different textures. Try a page with bumps or gritty paper maybe complementing a gritty textured image or maybe contrasting a solid matte color.

Only read the following if you promise you post a full detailed scan of the book when it's finished! ;)

- You possibly would like to mention the subgenres that BoC helped originate.(at least a little share of them)
- Add an item about this board/community as well.

Awesome idea, i'll go experimenting with this. :)

Just went shopping, and i got..

- Foamboard, for the cover
- Reflective paperstuff (like mentioned above)
- Transparent paper, should be able to do something cool with that
- Photopaper to print most of the book on
- Glue :P
- Lil' rubberish things

Now this is my idea for the cover. It's gonna be the size of a DVDcover. And it works like a calendar to flip the pages (you know, flip upwards in stead of to the left). And since there's no way to explain boc just by words, i'm gonna add a CD with 2 or 3 songs per album. With info on the songs in the book, per spread or something.

Image

The black part on the cover is gonna be a photo or something, this is just a quick visualisation.
I'm gonna cut out the white letters (boc), but i'll use such a rubber thingy in the middle of the O, so i can put the CD right on the first page. Get it? :)

Oh btw, 1 bad thing, i thought i had 10 weeks to make this. Only seems to be 3... :? And i got other stuff going on ofcourse. So it isn't gonna be the BIG book i wanted to make, but this is also cool i think.
Disco/Bio, and then per spread a song. Plus some cool quotes and other stuff.

So, wacha think?

I like the concept well enough, but I think I will need to see how your visuals end up, because right now it's looking very plain. Black and white doesn't really strike me as boc-ish.

minor update; Made another book for the project from my last term, cause i just had too little time for my bocbook idea.
Now the bocbook wil be my graduation project (no clue how to say that in proper english, maybe like this? :P ). So we're back to 10 weeks, which starts next week.
And i'll probably come up with a slightly changed concept than the above.

That's all.

heya!
im a graphic design student-1st year. Love the booklet idea!
I have already done a boc themed layout project.
Did pretty well. it's actually damn difficult to do the boc thing with original imagery without it coming across as fake. BOC remain a huge influence in my own work.

oh, im glad to have just joined this forum, looking forward to making it a new internet obsession.
