ok, im gonna try to give my thoughts, right off the top of my head.

i liked unheard a lot! a lot of it had that classic warp sound that i am quite fond of. Just glancing over the tracklist again, and I was into just about every song. for me oval moon was the standout. fuck yeah autechre. loved rattlesnake by clark too. and obviously seven forty seven is just an epic masterpiece. the two plaid songs were nice too. the nightmares on wax tunes were a little more upbeat than im used to hearing from him, and they were cool too.

the infinite discs seemed pointless at first. then i realized how much fun its gonna be with two turntables. that will be fun to play with! lots of weird / mellow / banging loops to mix it up.

was NOT a big fan of recreated disc one. all of those lame indie bands at the beginning. but i did like luke viberts cover of LFO, which is admittedly not very different than the original. but hey the original is awesome, and this is just a slightly chiller version of that. that diamond watch wrists song was dumb. so many of those tracks were totally boring upon initial listen. but i must admit. i liked born ruffians take on milkman / to cure a weakling child. that shit was hilarious and it was an interesting take on two songs that i never would have thought to put together. but they connected them in a funny, playful way. yes it's "indie rock." get over it!

i like disc two WAY MORE than disc one. both of the grizzly bear and BoC covers are amazing. Pivot and Jamie Lidell really did a great job. both boc covers are more organic and acoustic than the originals and they both are amazing. bibios cover seems too short though. theres extra padding at the beginning. leilas take on vordhosbn is great. i mean, covering the song on piano is kind of the obvious thing to do. but im glad it was done. phylactery based on tilapia by autechre was lame. plaids cover of on my bus is awesome but it doesnt really resemble the original at all... it sounds like a b-side from the heavens door OST. on and the seefeel at the end covering some maximo park song ill never hear. thats OK though. seefeel's rendition is awesome.

i still havent listened to elemental yet but a nice long warp mix could be pretty great, and i know ill like the music, so im down!

so yeah thats my initial thoughts.

over all very happy with this box set.

True! I thought it was garbage at first but it's been on a few times now and it's really starting to grow on me! I don't care for their original material but I'm liking this cover.

the cover is totally like a reverse of what AFX does to all the people he remixes. they just made a silly, fuckall, dumbass parody of his songs, that were admittedly ridiculous to begin with.

Highlights from "Recreated":

I loved Mira Calix's take on IABPOITC right away, and liked it even more the second time around (I wasn't waiting for the beat to drop so I paid more attention). Lots of beautiful, subtle sounds. I'm kind of ambivalent about Bibio's "Kaini Industries" at the moment, but it will probably grow on me.

Tim Exile's cover of Lidell was fantastic...first time I'd heard his stuff. The guy has extremely precise, intriguing production aesthetics. I'll be checking him out more in the future. Vibert's take on LFO was perhaps a bit lazy, as some have pointed out, but he succeeded once again in churning out a banging track. And let's face it, Vibert is just a laid-back producer...his priority is to get your ass shaking, not to move mountains.

Autechre's LFO cover was more clever and twisted, but still pulled back some of the classic melodies and feel of the original. Sounds like Booth and Brown had a blast making it. The Born Ruffians take on Aphex's material had me grinning the whole time. It was brilliantly stupid, and they owned every minute of it.

Highlights from "Unheard":

Clark's track was an instant head-nodder, though obviously has return appeal. I loved that Plaid's two tracks were pretty different in style, though both newer tunes. Their more minimal track (can't remember which this is) was beautifully done. It might shape up to be one of my favorite Plaid tunes, actually.

Seven Forty Seven was amazing to hear on vinyl...this type of production really isn't suited for mp3, in my opinion. A good wall of sound needs the whole frequency spectrum. I heard lots of new sounds that weren't evident in the mp3 I've played over the past week...I'm sure more will surface on repeat listens. Autechre's tune was fun, but didn't strike me at first. I have a hunch it will later.

Interesting to hear a more ambient, beatless Flying Lotus track. I wasn't expecting that at all. The Broadcast tune was more traditional, but still divergent enough that it was evident why it wasn't included on previous releases. The Seefeel track was even more repetative than their other work, and too short...I've found I have to be in the right mood for them, but when I am, it's on in full force.

Overall:

This box set was money well spent, in my opinion (especially since it'll probably increase significantly in value). The vinyl is solid, heavy, and cut well. The sleeve design, with the embossing, reflective lettering, etc, is great. Very Warpy. The art booklet was like a time machine into old musical memories, and an earlier backdrop of the label that came before my time. Frankly, after coming home and listening to the set over the last few days, I feel a bit like I was transported to the UK back in the mid-90's, when all of this was blowing up. Very nostalgic, but for a place I never was, only visited (in the minds-eye and brief vacations).

Thought it was interesting that, all over the world, there were Warp fans opening up their boxes as well and also being transported to that time, remembering the legacy of the label. Made me smile a bit to think of it, since it's always been the type of music I've enjoyed in a bit of a vacuum (with the exception of my gal and a few friends here and there).
