Talking about contradictions: You said: 'Unlike religious fanatics I'm the one capable of admitting I know nothing about the "supernatural" which is why I BELIEVE IN NOTHING.' Knowing nothing about the 'supernatural' doesn't make believing in nothing true. Do you really think that not knowing is a firm ground to build on? Is the world around you gone when you close your eyes?
And hey, believing in nothing is a religion/ believe in it's own. It's the same as 'forced to do spontaniously'. Come on man.

Really, read/ re-read Dono's posts. He's right when he says that: You have bashed his/ our faith, intelligence, and said we're wrong. We don't want to go in that direction. Let's debate in an open civillized, en friendly way please. It's all goooood at Twoism. Let's keep it that way.

I don't believe in nothing. I don't believe in anything. It's not that I believe nothing supernatural exists. I just don't have any reason to believe that they do!

And I never said you were wrong. I said you have no reason to believe you are right which is why I do not believe.

It's not sacrificing children, or anything weird like that. A lot of what people think of or hear is not a true depiction. I don't dress up to go to church, I don't even go to church all the time! I don't hold bible studies in my living room, or wear a tie and slacks. I don't have 6 wives, I don't walk up to people and tell them they're going to hell, I don't preach, I drink alcohol, I cuss... I am a normal guy.

That sounds just like my life Dono.
I like the way you are christian. You're so right that most people have a certain image of us which in my case (but with many more christians) is so wrong. We're just normal blokes. It's hard to fight against those prejudices.
A few weeks ago, a college said to me, I never thought you were christian, cause you seem like a normal down to earth guy. It made my day..

Somehow christians make people mad in an unreasonable way. I don't get that. They hold us responsible for the crusades or any other bad thing 'christianity' has done. That's not fair. I'm not responsible for other peoples actions. I would be just as silly if we comdemn a complete group because of one action of an atheist. If other people make mistakes, does that make a whole believe/ religion untrustworthy? If so, any other believe, philosophy, theory or any other religion would be untrustworthy. Although extremist actions are always wrong, it's not fair to condemn a complete group who this extremist says he's part of. Give the others of that group a voice, a vote, and you'll see that 99 % of that group condemns that extremist action as well!

Here's a bold statement: A lot of atheists, non believers or agnostics for that matter, these days seem to be the fanatics or even extremists in their approach to people who think otherwise. I so many times, sense an agressive way of communication, which sabotages a healty conversation. Is this perhaps because they have a little growing up to do, to get to the part where they can conversate civil again?

Okay man.
The truth is out there.
And I you're right. Nobody can fully prove they are right. This goes for us both. We'll know for sure when we're dead. Untill that, make life a party. Have fun. But don't forget to think about the big questions in life. One way or another, there comes a time in life when important questions like these come up again. Don't push them away, but embrace them. Open up for anything possible.

Every believe (wheter it's christianity or atheism) grows stronger after a period of doubt..

why is it that I'm supposed to respect people's beliefs when they can't even give me a reason why they have them in the first place?

We're obviously have a semantics issue with what you and I consider to be belief and religion. I'm willing to bet we have the exact same opinions on both but it just so happens I can't bring myself to believe in something without solid evidence.

Dude, listen. I am done arguing with you in this thread. I believe what I do because of pure blind faith, because I choose to. You don't need a reason why I believe what I do in order to respect me. You seem to lack a basic human respect by letting a difference in belief systems get in the way.

If you want to keep talking to me about this, drop me an IM.

You choose to because you like the benefits that come with Christianity. You want to go to heaven, but of course you don't want to go to church EVERY SINGLE week for your entire life, you just want the perks...

as i understand it, with some of the more fascinating strands of christianity, that's part of the whole awesome deal - you get all the perks and you're forgiven for your flaws as a human being and loved nonetheless. what many of these nonreligious/christian debates actually revolve around is peoples' conflicting senses of justice more than their metaphysical beliefs. i actually have a very christian (meaning: follower of jesus and not of hebrew law/the old testament) sense of justice, i don't like the concept of hell and i want everyone to be loved and forgiven. of course, i also want everyone to act with justice and kindness and understanding, which is unrealistic of me myself and of everyone else. it's amazing to me, though, because i really do believe that the evils of society largely dissolve when people truly act with 'christian' love toward one another, real jesus-style love, and nothing would make me happier than to see the kingdom of god (according to some practicing christian interpretations, this means a state of earth in which humans act with godlike love toward one another in every interaction). the implausibility of this state of affairs doesn't alter my affection for the thought of it or the hope for it at all.

1. "If I had a hammer(i), i'd hammer(ii) in the morning"

2. (i) =/= (ii)

3. Apply maxim

Then try some more ^_^

I agree with him as well, Earthbound, but this is a very good example of how our opinions of what religious belief are different. Yes a "christlike" mentality is a very good thing. I consider myself to be Christian in that sense. But if the new testament is the Word of God, Jesus the Father then Christians cannot say things like "I don't like the idea of hell" when hell and eternal suffering is solely a new testament concept.

We're back to picking and choosing moral teachings from a book and that is not the same as being religious.

Well, you know, I liked the way he wrote about the this christlike mentality too. That was where I agreed on. Ofcourse we don't like the idea of hell. Who does really? The ideas of hell are nummerous. I see hell as a world without God, or the christlike mentality as you will.

What I don't like in what you say is that you seem to know completely what I believe as you seem to be completely sure that our beliefs are different, and where they are different. That's a hell of a trick mate, because I don't even know completely what I believe. Help me out here..

You see, that is my recurring point. You seem to know all about my believe, and how it works. With all respect, that's kind of cocky in a way. You feeling me?

Celibrate the differences!

This goes for you too Tek.
Do you have a crystall ball where you can see our thoughts, and true believes or something?
I'm stunned you know all this just by a few posts on this thread. Come on man.. Really..

..Matthew, Mark, Luke (Gospel of Luke and Acts), John (Revelation). They may not like the idea but to a Christian eternal damnation for the unbeliever is real. It can't be ignored.

And we've said nothing about your beliefs. The problem is with belief itself and mindless devotion to potentially dangerous religious dogma. But it seems you aren't even a true Christian (ignoring your idea of what it means to be Christian) so I don't really think we need to have this conversation anymore and I mean that in a very geniune and nice way. Seriously :)

My faith below.

I believe that the bible is 100% truth.
I believe that Jesus is the Son of God.
I believe that Jesus died for mankind, and rose from the dead, to save mankind.
I am alive because of grace.

I think "organized religion" is sort of a joke at times. I don't like the word religion. My faith, is a personal thing between me and the maker. My mission on earth as I can see it now is to love people, to strive to be kind, compassionate, understanding, patient, as to show people that I am different through my actions.

That is my "Christian" walk. Nothing more, and nothing less. I believe because I have faith.

Read into that what you will. Would be nice to have some data over the 110 IQ mark, though.
