I'd support a "music collective" of course, in fact I've worked with some, mostly online groups of artists that band together and promote each other's music via the website or samplers. The fact is though that the music made by those artists is usually completely free or "name your own price", which honestly are the only forms I think art, emotion invoking collected energy, should be sold for.
Not too many people know about my music, but even if I were to somehow become completely famous overnight, I'd still release my music for free with at most a little "donate via PayPal" button at the top of my page. I guess I might be one of the few people out there who doesn't see artistic endeavors as a primary career option.
There are some independent artists who whore out their music as well, although less prominent. Anyone who wants to charge album prices for some copies of 128kbps MP3's online is a cocksucker, regardless of their job and affiliation.
I can totally understand where you're coming from, I used to think the same exact way like two years ago or so. I even wrote an essay on the subject for a class.
The reason we disagree is that I don't think most music is really art, per se. Hell, I don't even really consider BoC's music to be art, though I'd say BoC comes pretty close. I agree that art shouldn't be marketed are done business with. But I don't everything needs to be art, it for me doesn't make it any less valuable or unenjoyable if it isn't.
The main problem with that way of thinking for me is that it is a pipe dream and that it only works over the internet. I love buying physical copies of albums, especially on vinyl. That wouldn't really be possible in that system, would it? Physical copies would have to cost some ammount as producing them isn't free.
With that said, of course I respect your opinion too, even though I do think it's a bit naive. But if that's what you're willing to fight for then all the luck to you
