Its nice to find a forum where these things can be discussed in an adult fashion without it turning the thread into a car crash. Everyone is coming at it from different angles , different timescales and perspectives , so for me , its nice to say " this is where i'm at " and not have someone tell me i'm wrong. I've seen threads like this spiral out of control , so it really is a credit to twoism that its members are much more tolerant of other peoples opinions.

I agree. I think that the term god can be extrapolated to the universe and everything within itself. Which is essentially the hindu notion- same with the transcendental oversoul and all that. Everything is one unifying entity- a force or 'soul' if one wants to call it that- and its the glue that keeps everything together. I think in large our perspective on the universe has been manipulated by language and we don't see ourselves as part of it so much as individuals placed somewhere along it. It's different wording but it has a lot of implications and overtime influences our outlook on things. I believe in being- and to me that's what everything in the universe does- it exists. It's driven to be itself and build and grow and birth and die and be reborn.

Well I am not, not even agnostic, complete atheist here. I used to be agnostic in my teen years but as time went on and knowledge deepened as well as reflection and countless hours of working out on the question I am now firmly sure of my conclusions.

Of course I have to say the conclusions are mine and mine alone, I can't vouch or be a zealot and profess it. That's one of the many things that irks me about religions, the way into which they corral the masses, turning religion essentially into a tool of mob control. Their road track for the last millenia is pretty awful no matter which religion.

Anyhow, just my thoughts on the matter.

any other dudeist boccers?

I'd consider myself an atheist dudeist. I'm not preachy about it or anything; as far as I'm concerned nothing has been proven correct so everyone is entitled to believe whatever it is that makes them happy and brings comfort. I'm personally too much of a pessimist/realist to prescribe to anything.

I'm not an atheist cuz that word has taken to mean things other than its intended definition. Though I don't believe in god as that man upstairs either...

Also is dudeism legit? I didn't even know that...

It's funny to me that dudeism seems to make more sense than a lot of organized religions do (IMO of course). I don't take it too seriously when it comes to worship or anything like that but it fits my laid back, peaceful demeanor 8)

I personally believe humans are supposed to build their own religion. That's what I do. I think words reduce belief systems and don't do them justice.

But I don't believe in god. I don't believe that if I should throw my questions and pleadings into the universe that it will necessary answer back. I think we're too entitled to our existence. Though sometimes the universe works in very mysterious ways...

There are some interesting ideas in Christianity, I guess. Paul is sort of cool. I think his hard-line universalism can be inspiring for all fields where things need to be invented and where the possibility of something new needs people to rally to it. Maybe it's unusable if you take it verbatim, and in the end it's paradoxically the core of the persecutory nature of much of what the Church has done.

What I'm sure about is that I find today's consumerism of ideologies very sad: "I will buy into this lifestyle because that's what I prefer" and especially "I will buy into this lifestyle because life's though and that's what comforts me". I think belief has to do with transformation, with what doesn't exist (yet) - so in a way you believe in something because decide that you must believe in it, because you have met the possibility of the new in some form so you decide that things have to go in a different direction. I think that any belief which is based on what already is, and which is oriented towards a world that already exists, is a bit pointless. It makes me sad rather than angry, though, because sometimes these beliefs aren't even pret-à-porter McBeliefs: people genuinely put energy and enthusiasm into them, and being sensitive to good intentions, I always want to do something about it. To hug them at least. But I guess they'll be ok anyway.

Bottom line is freedom to me doesn't really mean choosing what fits you best, least of all a system of beliefs. That's, at best, convenience, which is not bad of course; and more often panem et circenses, which is very bad. I have to say, though, that in principle I'm not against being able to choose for convenience. I am against it in some particular cases, and in most other cases it's kind of irrelevant so I just shrug.

Anyway, I don't believe in a god and despite rating Paul I'm not too fond of the Church (and various other forms of organised religion). But I'm not really an atheist either, because I was never taught that there is a god so it's all just a non-problem for me. I can't really take a stance on a problem I'm not even aware of.

It's really becoming something now. Still something of a joke in a way, but it has a lot of really interesting layers and ideas. At its core, its a stylish peaceful way of taking it easy.

I received a book at Christmas called The Dude and The Zen Master. Good read, a convo between Jeff Bridges and Bernie Glassman reflecting The Dude's similarities to Zen.

Nope. Think for yourself.

If there is a higher power (entirely possible, if implausible) you do not know how he/she/it works, and neither does any other person now or ever.

I attempt to stay out of religious discussions since they always get out of control, I don't really believe in anything. that would label me as an atheist but with the way people view the definition these days I don't even want to call myself one, heck I don't even like the idea of being labeled.
I just wish people would get along :/
Why can't everyone just be?

Yeah I have no religious beliefs but I'm scared shitless of giving someone the impression that I'm Eugene the Atheist.

^ me too! There seems to be a fundamentalist, almost religion-like strand of atheism these days.

I have no beliefs at all, but Richard Dawkins makes me want to go to church.
