How did you first hear about Boards of Canada?

Back when I used to read NME (yeah, yeah, I know), they put MHTRTC in their end of year list. I thought the short write up made it sound fascinating and bought it as soon as I could. Needless to say, I totally loved it.

The usual suspects: David Firth, Adult Swim, and their remix of Beck's "Broken Drum" for Guerolito, which still to this day was the first time I conciously took wind of what they were musically all about. Interest kind of sat dormant in me for a while and I got more and more into the Grateful Dead, because my father had finally found an excuse to take his kid out to meet old deadheads and go to cover band shows. Once or twice, tailgating before or after a Furthur/Ratdog/ or Phish or Dark Star Orchestra show, I can recall hearing Turquoise Hexagon Sun, Aquarius, etc. blasting from other freaks' vehicles around us. All this continued for about 5 years until I found our college radio station's copy of IABPOITC on vinyl after my show one day and decided to have a listen. It ended up blowing me away, I went back on the air and played it once, and I have been hooked ever since. I have also basically never found another soul who had heard of BoC before meeting me- the people I know who listen to the brothers' music do so because I've had it playing from my stereo and they were curious.

I would love to change this sometime and I really hope to come acoss other BoC-heads in my neck of the woods- I don't know how many there are in Berlin but if we get lucky, they'll host a listening party here in the Volksbühne like they did for Geogaddi. Is there anyone on here from Berlin? Should I make another thread about this?

my bestfriend told me about how he really liked Geogaddi and MHTRTC, the songs Twoism, Aquarius, ROYGBIV, Kid For Today, Music is Math and Pete Standing Alone were some of the first works I had heard and I felt like I had found the most amazing music. Nothing else in music had the same effect on me after that.

Yeah i had no clue what i was listening to and why it was so good. Then when i heard their official releases i was blown away even further. boc is just in my soul now lol.

During the RSD saga I would play those tones on a loop up at my practice space and one day some hard core metal kids wondered by and asked wtf that was playing. So I gave them a mem card w/the 3 studio lps on it and got word the are loving it, geogaddi especially!

I heard BoC for the first time on yahoo launchcast in 2003. The song was 1969. Unforgettable. They were officially established as my favorite band a few days later while listening to 1969 in my car and realizing that my trip odometer also read 1969. I miss launchcast, it was much better than Pandora.

Fall of 98 when American release of MhtRtC came out. I think I bought most of what Warp was putting out at the time on principle. Just remember that album was everything I had hoped "IDM" could be. I distinctly remember being annoyed with Aphex's recent stuff and most of Lp5 at the time. Ironically, BoC allowed me back into seeing the bigger picture and I actually like Autechre (especially Chiastic Slide era) more that this point but it was the thing that made me gaga for the whole genre- tracking down records, getting obscure stuff on soulseek, etc.

My roommate played Geogaddi while we were doing homework or something almost four years ago. I think the first track to really grab my attention was Sunshine Recorder. Then Alpha and Omega. I didn't know the track names at the time, but a month or so later when I checked Geogaddi out again I recognized them--those two really stood out. They're favorites to this day. I continued to listen to Geogaddi a lot and it greatly influenced my own music. I also had the other albums but was not too familiar with them, though I played them in the background without carefully listening occasionally. I would have already called them my favorite group at that point, but it wasn't until a year ago that I really got to know MHTRTC. I somehow managed to not listen to IABPOITC until about 5 months ago. Now Amo and the title track are among my favorites. I didn't like Campfire as much, though I do like it and have listened to it all the way through a few times. I'm pretty familiar with Boc Maxima, and a few of the Few Old Tunes.

I actually stumbled upon the gents by accident

I had just gone through my first really bad break up and didn't know what to do with myself.

I used to be a metaller, used to love nirvana, pearl jam, lots of dance music and ended up just finding myself lost and emotionally distraught......bit of an identity crisis I guess. I was about 19 years old and had just lost my dad. Not great times tbh.

Spent a lot of time at the computer.......just.....well......just browsing I guess. Trying to find......something.

Then i found WinMX.........and started downloading.......

I actually think I was searching for "Olive - You are not alone" and for some reason, downloaded a track called "Pete standing alone"....fell in love with music all over again.

Next stop was the Warp store

I actually thought this was a much rarer scene than it was but i think (possibly correct me if I am wrong Fredd-e) that i found your site back in 1999 and possibly sent you a mail in amazement at the information you had on this mysterious duo. I either recall a lovely email back from yourself.....or a VERY real dream

The more I found out about them (and didn't) the more the mystery wrapped itself around my very being.

13 years later, with a wonderful wife, 2 beautiful girls, a career i love and still very much in love with the BOC sound, here I am.....just as excited about this new sound as I was back then

They mean a lot to me do these boys as I feel they shouldered a lot of my grief without even knowing it.

I either recall a lovely email back from yourself.....or a VERY real dream

The original 'Bocpages'(it was called something else back then as far as I remember) was started by someone else, and Fredd-E took it over around the early noughties(correct me if I'm wrong here Fredd!) - he had orignally correlated all of the BoC material from the web that was available at the time, and did a really great job, but he had to give it up for some reason or another, and Fredd took it over and curated and created the excellent Boc Pages we have today.

You could be right, it could've been Fredd...I just seem to remember that another guy did alot of the original work in getting all of the available BoC info together on one web site back then - he had loads of stuff concerning the songs on MHTRTC and Geogaddi(where the samples were from, what some of the hidden meassages were), and all the info from the original Boc Discography page, which Fredd then took over....it's over 10 years ago, the memory is starting to go a little!!

Think i've said elsewhere but i was a regular member of the IDM discussion list on Hyperreal from around '95 until, i dunno, about '99 maybe. Heard their name mentioned on there around '96 and decided to make a concerted effort to look for anything by them next time i was in london going record shopping. Ventured into Ambient Soho and saw one in there with their name on, seemed it was a small compilation EP from various artists includng Funkstorung and Jega (as well as Boards) so got it on the strength of those names that I already knew about. Did not realise that i was picking up Mask 100, which turned out to be quite a rare record indeed. Must have been the week Mask 100 was released, no other way I could have found it otherwise just sitting there. 15 pounds it cost me i seem to remember. So the first I heard of BoC was the track Korona. Bloody loved it, had a 'vibe' like nothing else around the time. This then led onto me buying Hi-Scores EP a month or two later and being absorbed in their work from then onwards
