Because people aren't happy with what they have, they need more all the time. The need to believe in an afterlife is a type of greed, why can't people just be happy that they live and die? So Jesus took advantage of people's greed by promising them a way into heaven, which was unkind of him as heaven doesn't exist.

Or at least this is how I perceived it.

This. I was just coming here to respond on this. We would of course want more life than what we are given so the "promise" of more makes us greedy..

Does anyone think the track title implies nothingness and not "not one thing" like in the Beatles song?

Nothingness is real and Jesus lied to protect fragile and hysteric minds from the concept?
How can nothingness be a concept and real though? Is it a clumsy way to illustrate the absence of Heaven and Hell?

The title I think is a direct reference to 'Nihilism', the philosophy that the brothers attest to be leaning more towards as they get older.

From dictionary.com...

a) an extreme form of skepticism: the denial of all real existence or the possibility of an objective basis for truth.

b) nothingness or nonexistence.

Sure I'm just trying to figure out what Jesus' angle is in the poem.

If he is omnipotent enough to just flirt with our greed like it was nothing, why does he need an army of fools?

you should check this,
http://boccast.com/2014/03/tomorrows-harvest-part-2/

also what is amazing about TH is how the band put different "sources" in to the their tracks, these sources are puttin so well that it triggers our emotions very deeply and we making a picture in our minds..It's like Nothing is real, we have philosophical theological poem, we have robotic cold rhytm and this all make evry interesting picture, but on the surface it's pretty basic...

There is IMO no need to go into his motivations because they are just using him as the conduit for an idea. He isn't actually the important part here, apart from being used as an example of the way humans apparently tend to deceive ourselves (in this case by using a figure to strengthen a belief in God, goodness, everlasting life, plentitude, the survival of our race etc). The passage seems to me to be more of a reflection of our collective attitudes and responses as a species, and the brothers' personal feelings and how they have changed over the years, rather than a specific reflection on the character/historical person.

EDIT: I need to learn to check timestamps. Old post...

I think of the monologue as from the point of view of a human mind riddled with fluorescent rocks with its chemical communication translated in to words personally but I can understand those that wouldn't agree.

Could you explain this a bit further?

Fluor-escent green rocks. Maybe turquoise depending on your own perception.

What does the human mind need for willingness and comfort? Serotonin and melatonin in harmony. If something where to get in the way of millions of people in the wider world converting serotonin in to melatonin I wonder what would happen....

Here we are again, this track bringing me to the verge of tears. I can't really describe why exactly, it just strikes several chords and stirs me like few other tracks do. Similar to 5-9-78 and Whitewater, among others. It's just hypnotic in the best way possible. I cannot say enough how much I love this fu :] :] ng track.

Hey, not sure if someone already noticed, but there seems to be a little conversation at the end of the track, it's quite impossible to distinguish a word, but i'm pretty sure it's there. It starts at 3:00 and you can hear it on the right channel.
