That Mark Isham's soundtrack is from the 'mrs. Soffel' movie, the plot says that she reads the bible to the Biddle brothers, I still haven't seen it yet, but probably there could be a connection with the TH theme
It is the Self, the individual Mind, that contains immortality and ultimate truth.
Now I know where the Self is. It's in our own minds. It's a form of human energy. Our atoms are six billion years old. We've got six billion years of memory in our minds.

Its pretty close! BOC have always been kind of a cover band anyway. Hearing soundtrack pieces and recreating the sounds, trying to get there, and adding whatever they can imagine to make it cooler.

A while ago I was listening to a rebroadcast of an old (mid 1990's) Art Bell radio show and he was talking to someone who was trying to blow the whistle on companies that make GMOs like Monsanto, ect. I started listening mid-conversation, but I caught a piece where this whistle blower guy was talking about "suicide seeds", which, apparently is the term used for GM seeds that allow you to grow a crop once, but the seeds of that crop are useless, or in another word -- dead. Which also means that if all the seeds planted are GM one-time-use seeds and if there's a total economic collapse making it impossible to pay for the patented seeds, then we have a serious global food shortage.

If you type "suicide seeds" into wikipedia, it redirects you to this article that goes into detail.

Were the bros directly referencing genetically modified seeds when they made "Semena Mertvykh"? Probably not, right? But, I thought it was, uh... food for thought. *rim shot*

Regardless of the BOC connection, that's a really interesting read. Thanks for sharing!

I could see that, it ties into the theme of the album for sure.

The album seems to go from despair to hope, but ends dark again. In keeping with the John Carpenter vibe though, it reminded me of the final shots of a bunch of his films where you think its resolved - but there's a final twist implying its not over yet.

Funny you mention that, it seems part of the somber string sounds in this were taken/inspired from the start of the Main titles from the OG OST of Blade Runner;

the motif in this song is heard in quite a few of 80's soundtracks, so it's probably more of a general reference than one single influence.

Rubot's 'final twist' comment regarding John Carpenter movies makes me think of Prince of Darkness, and "Semena" definitely has a Prince of Darkness vibe to it. The ending it so bleak!

What did you guys think of the closer? To be honest, I don't think its far removed from the loneliness of Farewell Fire. They both have that 'lone synth' vibe to them. Where as FF was more melodic, I find this to be more about drone chord progression which is a recurring characteristic of the album it seems. My only wonder though is if it's Mike or Marc on the synth.

Love this track!! white noise and all. :x

Still, remember the day I first heard this track. It was a sunny spring day. And hearing this cold sounds was very dual feeling. The melody and the drone sound combine with the overall atmosphere. I think one of the brothers said that this track was made playing a recorder extremely slow, to get that radiate drone sound. And that they are very pleased with the result. This is actually a very calm track, almost meditative.

I was having a nostalgic moment today and put on the Terminator main theme track, it instantly brought Me vibes of Semena Mertvykh with some of the phrasing and echoes, faster in Terminator, slower in TH.

That theme came out around 1985, not far fetched it would be in their agglutination of musical tapestry in some way.
Molest me not with this pocket calculator stuff.
